The golf world was turned upside down almost two months ago when the merger between the former rivals, the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour, and LIV Golf, was announced. The decision was unexpected for players and the public alike. Amid the many pros who spoke up about their displeasure with the decision, one name was missing: Tiger Woods. The 15-time major winner had maintained his silence about the $3 billion merger for months; however, that all changed last week.
Now, it has been just a few days since the golf great broke his silence and was appointed as the sixth member of the PGA Tour Policy Board. His move left many with a lot to say, including Woods’ fellow policy board member, Rory McIlroy, who recently opened up about the reason for the golf legend’s appointment.

When the 82-time PGA Tour champion was appointed as the sixth member of the board, people all around had different reactions. A few fellow golfers, such as Justin Thomas, praised Woods’ decision, while, on the other hand, a few members of the golf world had their own inhibitions about the decision. But if there was anything that seemed right, Woods would put the players’ interests first.
Recently, the Northern Irishman sat down with the media at TPC Southwind, where the golfers are competing in the first FedEx Cup playoffs, the FedEx St. Jude Championship. An interviewer asked the Irishman about his thoughts on the recent PGA Tour policy update involving the golf legend. McIlroy referred to the decision as a “great addition.”
The Irishman said that Woods is one of the players with the “biggest legacy” on the Tour, and for him to be involved in the discussions around the future of professional golf is very important. His involvement will help shape the future of the game.
The 4-time major winner then shared that the 15-time major champion now actually has a vote in everything that happens on the PGA Tour, as compared to earlier, before joining the board, when he still had an influence on the Tour’s policies but no voting rights. Shedding some more light on Woods’ appointment, McIlroy appreciated his fellow golfer’s decision to join the board.

The 5X Masters champion has been off the greens for most of the 2023 season. He was last seen competing at Augusta during the beginning of the season, and after that, the golfer withdrew from almost all of the events owing to his recovery. During his press conference, McIlroy pointed out that all the player directors try to manage the golf tournaments while also navigating other things on the side.
He said that the Golf Hall of Famer probably has more time on his hands as compared to other player directors, and for him to step in and take the load off of the player directors is “much appreciated.”
