When you look at golf players who have had a tough time in their careers, one name nestled in the sea of many is Grayson Murray. With a streak of devastating lows, such as struggling with his sobriety, scuffles with other players, and accidents resulting in withdrawal from tournaments, one would think he would have lost confidence in himself.

But proving everyone wrong, Murray had some words of wisdom to part with during an interview held post-round 1 of the ongoing John Deere Classic. “If you see the result and believe in yourself, then I think there’s no reason that I can’t step on the first Tee and think that I’m the best player in the field,” Murray said. His statement was posted by the official account of the PGA Tour on Twitter.

Murray’s confidence stems from his brilliant performance on the field during round 1 of the John Deere Classic 2023. He started off rock solid with an excellent shot of 7-under 64. This earned him the second spot on the leaderboard. With only a few missed birdies, the entire round showed off his understanding and patience in the game.

Murray ended the first round with five birdies followed by a magnificent chip-in eagle from 42 feet on the par-5 second. This showcased his immense accuracy at the game. Needless to say, this got fans and experts excited. With round 2 starting off, the action is getting way more intense.

Murray’s turbulent past

For Murray, this year is all about reconstruction; rebuilding his career from the ground up. In 2021, Murray got into treatment for mental health along with alcohol abuse. Making a return to competition in 2022, he made headlines, unfortunately, not the good kind. He got into a Twitter feud with Kevin Na as he criticized Kevin’s slow play during the 2022 Sony Open.

In October of the same year, Murray had a horrific scooter accident. This came ahead of his season debut at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Murray underwent a head-on collision with a car. This resulted in him receiving 50 stitches, with 25 of them on his face. As a result, the former PGA Tour winner had to withdraw his name from the tournament.
