With the season winding down and the sports world a little quieter, how are golf’s biggest stars making the most of their time? This is that sweet spot where players can step away from the pressure and enjoy life away from the fairways and greens. Whether hitting the practice range, hanging out with friends, or simply unwinding, it’s their time to savor. When it comes to Phil Mickelson, it’s pretty easy to guess how he spends his downtime.
The lefty is a fan favorite and is known to have a much more social presence in and around the world of golf. Recently, he managed to captivate his audience for the umpteenth time—but this time, it’s his dad stealing the spotlight with his antics.
Phil Mickelson spent this past Sunday watching his 89-year-old father, Philip Alfred Mickelson Sr., mow the lawn. And honestly, he didn’t feel bad about it at all! Capturing the endearing moment on camera, Mickelson Jr. commented, “There is my dad, 89 years old, and mowing the lawn. I should probably go help him. Eh, it looks like he got it under control.”

A glimpse of a wholesome moment gave fans a feel-good lift. Thanks to Mickelson, the video brought a smile to many faces. And comments like, “God Bless him!,” “Love it, Phil,” and “That is awesome,” echoed the same emotions. Another user chimed in with, “Damn. Look at that machine. I bet he says they don’t make them like this anymore. Freaking awesome. Love this.” Kudos to that observation, as it indeed is a familiar truth because, let’s face it, that could be any of our dads.
Likewise, when it comes to making observations, fans are undeniably great at it. One user even noticed how great Phil Sr. looks at 89. “Would love to know what he does to take care of himself to look so good at 89 or is it just good genes,” wrote the fan. Another user, echoing the same sentiment, remarked, “Looks like heaven. You’re Dad looks fantastic.”
While the comment section was flooded with compliments for Phil Mickelson’s father, fans also didn’t fail to take notes on the 54-year-old nonchalant philosophy of life. Noting his caption, a user wrote, “Best mentality,“ while another chimed in, “Everyone seems to be doing this now.” One user took this to another level, bringing the legendary Tiger Woods into the chat. The user wrote, “Someone should have told Tiger that about 20 years ago .”

Relentless self-improvement and a “fix everything” mentality, which undoubtedly comes as a contrast, famously marked Woods’ early career to Mickelson’s more relaxed approach, as he watched his dad take on the lawn without interference. But why particularly Woods? Well, long story short, Woods and Mickelson have shared a long-standing rivalry throughout their careers, including a fair share of frosty moments. However, now that Mickelson has moved to LIV, their golfing rivalry is all but over.
But, as with any comment section, there was one fan who couldn’t resist a little shade, writing, “He’s a better man than you’ll ever be!” Though the user didn’t specify the reason, this probably stems from him joining the Saudi-funded league which disappointed some fans. But for this one day, none of that really mattered. The focus was all on family, an old lawnmower, and a reminder that sometimes, the best Sundays are spent just like that.
