There have been very few golfers like Tiger Woods, who made a mockery of his competition. He outplayed the ones who were there before him and the ones who came after him. In fact, his 2000 season is considered one of the best-ever individual seasons in golf history. Very few performances have come close to that dominance.

The most recent one? Scottie Scheffler‘s iconic 2024 season. A season that pushed the current World No.1 from great to elite. Scheffler’s season doesn’t just stand out for his titles, but for the level of consistency he brought out. He made the cut at all the events he took part in, won 7 titles, and finished second on two other occasions. But is it better than Woods’s 2000 PGA Tour season? Some people do think so, and many don’t.

In an interview with Sean Zak for GOLF.com, Bubba Watson was asked about his former caddie Ted Scott. Scott was Bubba Watson’s caddie for 15 years before the pair decided to split up. Scott then took up the role of the bagman for Scottie Scheffler and has played a pivotal role in the rise of the 28-year-old to the World No.1 position.

Speaking about Scott, Bubba stated that Scott’s joining Scottie Scheffler changed the world. Since joining Scottie Scheffler, Scott has pushed the then-young star to an “elite golfer”, with his mentorship and experience leading him to 13 PGA Tour victories. His bet with Scottie Scheffler for ten hole-outs per season is another example of how the caddie pushes his star golfer to pursue success.

So Watson had a fair claim there. But just before sharing his thoughts on Scheffler’s success with Scott, the 2x Major winner said something a bit more…debatable. “I know Tiger did some stuff in 2000 but Scottie’s year (2024) was the best we’ve ever seen.” That’s one way to stoke the fire in the golfing world.

Fans were quick to criticize and call out the two-time Masters winner on X.

Fans criticize Bubba Watson’s take on Scottie Scheffler and Tiger Woods

There were few fans who did not feel the need to waste words to convey their opposition to Bubba Watson’s take. One fan just said, “No,” while another fan was also short and to the point, replying, “Not even close.” On a similar note, another fan replied on X, “Could be one of the worst golf takes of all times.”

Why are the fans so critical of such a take? Three majors is no ordinary feat. Tiger Woods destroyed his competition during the 2000 season, claiming the US Open, the PGA Championship, and the Open Championship en route to 9 PGA Tour wins. Scheffler, in comparison, only had 7 wins and 1 major trophy during the 2024 season.

Woods also made the top 25 at every single tournament he took part in. Scheffler made it for 17 of the 19 events, missing out at the US Open and the BMW Championship. “Tiger’s 2000 season. 20 starts. 20 top 25s.17 top 10s. 3 majors. 4 runners-up,” one fan laid bare the facts for everyone’s convenience. However, Scheffler did also win the Olympic Gold to underline a very impressive 2024.

Bubba Watson did catch some strays as well. One fan expressed no surprise as according to him, “Bubba being a moron as usual.” Another netizen accused Bubba Watson of just throwing a spanner in the works to create an unnecessary buzz for himself and throw himself back in the news, especially amongst the PGA Tour fans. The 12-time PGA Tour winner was among the first players to sign and move to LIV Golf. “Bubba’s grasping for relevance with an answer like that,” stated the fan.

One fan, though, was in support of Watson’s take. He made the case that the current field is stronger and more talented than how it was during Woods’s time. This makes any comparable achievement worth more in this era than in earlier eras. “Yup. The field now compared to 2000 is better in every way. Those 2000 dudes wouldn’t even make the corn ferry.”

What do you think of the former PGA Tour Pro’s take about the two greats in golf? Do you think there is an argument to be made? Or is it a case of Watson choosing to ignore the facts? Elementary, my dear Watson.
