Did the Celtics miss a golden opportunity by not drafting Bronny James? What do you think?

LA Lakers have finally drafted Bronny James into the team. While the basketball community is torn between an array of opinions, Collin Morikawa gave his verdict on the matter. The world no. 6th, Morikawa, shared his own conundrum, confessing that he does indeed have mixed reviews. Being a Lakers fan since childhood, here is what Morikawa thinks the team should be doing for its future.

In the latest episode of the Smylie Show podcast, Morikawa was asked about what he thought of the Bronny James controversy. The golfer began by recalling how he was enjoying a sauna after his Summit practice when he noticed his phone blowing off with the news of LeBron’s son signing a 4-year contract with the LA Lakers. Morikawa reflected on how happy he was for J.J. Redick and then established how much of a Lakers fan he is.

Following this, Morikawa established that he was aware of Bronny’s health conditions that did not let him express his true skill. Thus he said, “He had the health scare so I think that kind of like took him out a little bit to see what his full potential was in college. But it’s interesting I mean, you’re you know you’re like what he was a 55th draft pick, you’re kind of in that zone where like now you got to go prove yourself.” Morikawa remarked that Bronny James needs to prove himself and his skills through either the summer league or any other; he needs to prove that he goes beyond his name.

Most of the controversy was raised because Bronny James was not able to play and prove to the world his skills during his college matches. The 19-year-old James was thus victimized by a Nepotism tag, which many in the community blame for why he was drafted in the first place. Born to one of the NBA’s and Lakers’ most famous players, LeBron James, this budding basketball player was accused of being taken up by the same team as his father. Many critics have suggested that, with his records alone, James would not have made it into the Lakers.

As if hinting at that, Morikawa thought of an alternative that could have pushed the topic of Nepotism out partially. He suggested that James should have been on another team instead of the Lakers. He remarked that it was the Celtics’ and Lakers’ hated rivals. Morikawa said, “I was reading things like the Celtics should have just drafted him. I think it was the Celtics before, like the Celtics should have just drafted him.” After the host, Smylie Kaufman insinuated that Bronny James getting drafted into the Celtics would have taken LeBron to the Celtics as well, Morikawa affirmed such a notion as a joke.

After speculating on several reasons and circumstances, Morikawa had a moment where a stark thought hit him. The two-time major winner remarked that getting Bronny might have been a strategy to keep LeBron on the team. He said, “Obviously he wants to play with LeBron. I think it was like a play. I think it was a play for the Lakers to keep LeBron because he wants to play with him.”

However, soon after, Morikawa also explored the ideas about how LeBron was getting older and his play had not been the best. In a time like this, he thinks that the Lakers can do with a ‘full reset’, and giving Bronny James a chance despite the heated controversy can be a sign of that.
