It was arguably the worst start to an away campaign that any team can think of. Without any exaggeration, it was a nightmare for Team USA. For the first time in the history of the Ryder Cup, they failed to take the lead with 64 holes being played.

However, one man on the USA team did not appear to be worried. Not one bit! Even after Team Europe thrashed them at a historic 4-0 in Friday Fourballs, Xander Schauffele fearlessly proclaimed that he was “not worried” at all!

Ahead of the Ryder Cup, Schauffele’s playing mate and close friend, Cantlay, told the press conference that Schauffele is like ‘Tony Robbins. He exudes an extremely positive mindset that can be puzzling at times. If anyone had any doubt about this, the seven-time PGA Tour winner’s comments after a humiliating first session will leave no room for that.

Speaking to the media after a harrowing first session, Schauffele boldly claimed, “Yeah, I’m not worried.” The 29-year-old golfer believes they have a strong team that has no lack of depth in the squad. Indeed, the current US squad boasts of having seven major winners on their side. Understandably, Schauffele believes they can make a comeback.

Our team is deep. These boys will come out hungry these next matches,” the veteran golfer further added. Fortunately, for the current World No. 6, there are instances of historic comebacks. One only has to look back a week to find Europe making a comeback and eventually retaining the trophy after getting thrashed by the USA at the first session of the Solheim Cup.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay teamed up to play against Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood. The European duo, however, got the better of them, winning 2&1 to complete the four-point victory for Europe. Was it Cantlay and Schauffele’s poor form or the sheer brilliance of Fleetwood and McIlroy? Looking at the match, it’ll appear both. The American duo had been trailing since the beginning before recovering their form and putting up a competition. Unfortunately, that couldn’t make up for the points lost early on!

Ironically, the duo won both their foursome matches two years ago at Whistling Woods. Now, it’s a different story altogether. However, this seems to be the case with the entire US team.

Team USA is struggling to find their footing on European soil

After losing all the matches in the foursomes, the USA is seeking to undo the damage in the afternoon fourballs. Till now, they have only been partially successful, winning one and a half points against Europe’s total of six and a half. Not a single pair of Americans were able to grab a win on Friday in either of the two sessions!

In the fourballs, Schauffele once again found himself going against his Palm Beach Country neighbor, Rory McIlroy, this time with a different partner in Collin Morikawa. The Irishman, on the other hand, was paired with Matt Fitzpatrick, and unfortunately for Americans once more, the duo took them down easily with a 5&3.

The USA now finds itself looking at a steep mountain to climb. They have to win 12.5 points from a possible 18 in the next three sessions. Zach Johnson’s boys will need a lot of that ‘hunger’ to make it happen!
