After wrapping the John Deere Classic last weekend, the PGA Tour is ready to host its next tournament, the Barbasol Championship this week. The event will be held at Keene Trace Golf Club – Champion Trace Course, Kentucky, and is a co-sanctioned event with the DP World Tour.

The tournament debuted on the PGA Tour in 2015 as an alternate event to The Open Championship. This is the 9th season of the event and it promises fans a fun-filled weekend with multiple players vying for the grand paycheque.

The Barbasol Championship begins on Thursday this week and will be played over 4 days, ending on the 16th of July. However, since Barbasol is played as an alternate event to the Genesis Scottish Open, it is lacking star players from its course. No players within the Top 50 list will be on their ground. But there are some good names that are hot picks for the tournament. The top 5 contenders as per the PGA Tour’s power rankings are as follows:

Ranked in the 5th place is Peter Quest. After spending weeks on the top of the leaderboard, the BYU golfer was recently rewarded with a special temporary membership to the PGA Tour. His recent performance at AT&T Byron Nelson, Rocket Mortgage Classic, and John Deere Classic past week helped him earn this status and he will definitely try to continue this streak with an attempt to win.

The fourth spot is claimed by Josh Teater. The Lexington native is currently on World No. 421 and has played at Barbasol before as well. A few weeks ago he had a second-place finish in the BMW Charity Pro-Am. With his previous experiences on the Keene Trace, he too will look to secure a win at the event.

The third position is claimed by Grayson Murray who is currently playing for the Korn Ferry Tour. Although he missed the cut at the Byron Nelson and Canadian Open, Murray made a sixth-place finish at the John Deere Classic and is confident of a good performance at Barbasol. He is currently 174th on the world ranking.

In the second position is Canadian golfer Taylor Pendrith who is currently World No.113. He was part of the international team in last year’s President Cup. This year he has made some advancement, and landed on T14 at the Rocket Mortgage Classic two weeks ago.

The top contender for this week is the 2009 US Open champion, Lucas Glover. Currently sitting at 112 on the world rankings, Clover’s last victory on the tour was in 2021 at the John Deere Classic. In 2023 he has made top-ten finishes including at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and the John Deere Classic, and will definitely be looking to make another victory on the PGA Tour this week.

The field at the Barbasol Championship and the prize money

Since the event has a co-sanctioned status with the DP World Tour in 2022, it means that a few European players will also be making a run for the trophy and the win. Danish golfer Søren Kjeldsen and England’s Andy Sullivan, will be participating in the Kentucky tournament as well. The stakes are high because of the whopping $3.8m prize money for this year, which is a boost of $100,00 compared to last year.
