Golf, a game of precision, patience, and passion, is no stranger to controversy. From heated debates over rule changes to fiery exchanges between players, the sport has its fair share of contentious issues. And then there’s the technology – the gadgets, the gizmos, and the methods that aim to give players an edge. The AimPoint technique, in particular, has been a topic of discussion, with some hailing it as a game-changer and others condemning it as a form of cheating. Amidst this backdrop, one golfer has found herself at the center of a heated debate, A Lim Kim.

The controversy surrounds Kim’s use of the AimPoint technique for short-distance putts during the third round. Some fans and fellow golfers have accused her of using the method to gain an unfair advantage, sparking a heated debate about the limits of technology in golf. “Golf has lost its way 🥴”, wrote MetalWork Golf on X. While Kim’s supporters argue that AimPoint is a legitimate tool for improving one’s game, her critics claim that it’s a form of cheating. The debate is ongoing, with no clear resolution in sight.

The controversy has overshadowed Kim’s recent performance at the Honda LPGA Thailand, where she finished sixth with a score of 17-under 271. Angel Yin of the US took home the top prize with a score of 28-under 260, and Akie Iwai of Japan came in second with a score of 27-under 261. Yang Hee-young, a three-time champion of the tournament, tied for 11th with a score of 14-under 274.

Fans turn red over the Honda LPGA Thailand controversy

Paige Spiranac is known to be the voice of golf and well she never disappoints with her bold comments. The same was the case in this matter as well as the golf influencer bluntly wrote, “Ban Aim Point”, while Veteran Nancy Lopez supported her comment by writing, “That is ridiculous.” Well, it seems like Paige Spiranac isn’t the only one frustrated with Aim-point as it is one of the reasons for slow play on the PGA Tour. Recently, Tom Kim was called out for his pace on Sunday at Pebble Beach, sparking a heated debate. Charley Hoffman, a 20-year-old tour veteran, even addressed the problem in a memo to his fellow players, emphasizing the need for a concerted effort to speed up play.

What’s your perspective on:

Is AimPoint a revolutionary tool or just a sneaky way to cheat in golf?

And now, Lucas Glover has joined the conversation, sharing his thoughts on fixing the problem. In his SiriusXM PGA Tour radio show, Glover suggested banning the AimPoint putting method, which he believes is slow and rude and also proposed other ideas like marking yardages on sprinkler heads, using lasers to measure distances, and having designated bunker rakers to prevent backups. “Statistics have beared that out. It’s also kind of rude to be up near the hole stomping around where the break is in your feet. It needs to be banned. It takes forever,” said Glover.

Retired golfer Trevor Immelmen also commented his thoughts on the matter, “I think it’s a cup outside right?”, while one fan wrote, “That should be a 2-stroke penalty.” Well, it has happened and not long ago. Collin Morikawa was handed a two-stroke penalty at the Hero World Challenge for breaching a rule related to the use of greens-reading materials, specifically the AimPoint putting technique. Morikawa’s caddie, J.J. Jakovac, had used a level to gauge the slope on the practice putting green and transferred the information to a chart in Morikawa’s yardage book, which is prohibited under Model Local Rule G-11.

Despite Morikawa’s claim that Jakovac had previously been told by a rules official that this was allowed, chief referee Stephen Cox informed Morikawa of the penalty on Sunday morning, resulting in a two-stroke addition to his third-round score, ultimately costing him a tie for sixth place. Claire Rogers also commented on the matter and sarcastically said, “Using your calculator on your math exam to double-check that 10+2=12.” Well, these were the thoughts of some of the golf enthusiasts but what are your thoughts?
