Should golf carts have stricter safety regulations to avoid such heartbreaking accidents?

On June 1, 2024, a person was airlifted from the Minnesota Course. This happened after a golf cart flipped over at around 4:00 pm ET. There were two people in the cart, and one of them, a 28-year-old was found injured. The victim was soon transported to a Toronto trauma center, and soon after passed away.

The Northumberland OPP has been investigating the case ever since. And now, over three months later, it looks like the case has finally come to a close. The final verdict came through just a few hours ago.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office recently took to sharing the details of the unfortunate accident from June, which took place during a bachelor party at the Lutsen’s Superior National Golf Course. The deputy sheriff claimed that on the day of the accident, they heard a page that addressed a medical call at the golf course in the USA. At the site, a golf cart had rolled over on the 17th hole and Kristopher Reginato of Thunder Bay, who was driving the cart, was lying on the floor, injured.

The passenger in the golf cart told the personnel that Reginato had put the cart in neutral before speeding down the hill. He claimed that he had even asked the victim to slow down, but he refused. Eventually, the duo ended up turning at an ‘unsafe speed’, which caused the rollover incident where Reginato lost his life. No criminal charges have been brought out against the passenger.

This unfortunate incident proves that golf courses are prone to accidents if the rules are not followed. Sadly, it isn’t the first time such dangerous incidents have occurred on the course either.

A prank led to a death at a golf course

Back in 2021, another unfortunate incident occurred on a TopGolf course in Essex, England. Conner Groom had a 12-foot tumble over a safety net in Chigwell on December 21, 2021. On May 23, 2022, after an intense investigation, his death was termed a misadventure. According to BBC, “the accident occurred as a result of inebriated by not malicious horseplay.”

What exactly went down? A group of friends were having a Christmas party and drinking all night. In jest, and inebriated, one friend pushed Groom over the net. And he fell. As per the live footage, this was being done as a joke amongst the group all night long. Detective Inspector Lydia George even claimed the same during the inquest. “Several times it shows the friends trying to push each other into the safety netting. It was seen as a joke.” Detective Inspector Lydia George said during the inquest.

Groom suffered a traumatic cervical spinal cord injury and a hypoxic brain injury from the fall. Although he was rushed to the Royal London Hospital, he was unable to recover, and a month later, on January 25, 2022, he succumbed to his injuries. Incidents like such are a call for caution!
