Did Sergio Garcia just embarrass himself with his Alcaraz remarks? What a joke!

“It would be amazing,” said a hopeful Sergio Garcia moments after winning his 1st LIV Golf title. What was he referring to? Well, the athlete was alluding to Carlos Alcaraz winning the Wimbledon and Spain emerging victorious at the 2024 UEFA European Championship. Couple that with the Spaniard and his team’s LIV Golf triumph in Andalucia, he couldn’t help but find the whole situation as nothing short of “amazing.”

A tweet was shared by Kyle Porter, a CBSSPORTS journalist, recounting Garcia’s comments made during his post-round interview. He said, “I might be wrong, but I think that if the soccer team wins tonight, it could be probably one of the biggest days in the history of Spanish sports.” The golfer even emphasized his wish for the Spanish team to win the 2024 EURO Cup when he said, “Alcaraz winning, us winning both individually and as a team, and then the national team winning the Euro Cup. It would be amazing to have all those four things happen in the same day. It would be amazing.”

The Spanish team, meanwhile, emerged triumphant at Euro 2024 by beating the likes of the England squad by 2-1. And Alcaraz, on the other hand, also managed to win the Wimbledon finals by triumphing against Novak Djokovic with figures of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (4). Well, this is exactly what Garcia wanted, all the while attributing the situation as a win for Spain as a whole. However, the fans weren’t too keen to agree with the Fireballs GC skipper.

Netizens fail to empathize with Sergio Garcia’s sentiments post-LIV Golf win

The LIV Golf Pro emerged victorious against the field of 54 golfers by scoring a figure of 5-under 208 and beating Anirban Lahiri in a playoff. Moreover, he carded a total of 11 birdies and 6 bogeys to clinch a title in his home country, Spain. A follower consequently mocked Sergio Garcia’s win while commenting, “lol comparing LIV to Wimbledon or Euro 2024,” while another user on X responded, “Sergio really placing that LIV win alongside a Wimbledon final win and a potential Euro Champs win in the football?”

The Spaniard has a total of 11 wins on the PGA Tour, including a major victory in the 2017 Masters Tournament. Aside from the same, he also boasts 15 victories in the European circuit as well. And a golf enthusiast couldn’t help but make fun of the 44-year-old by hinting at his wins; “What a joke. He won the masters. LIV needs to keep spinning to keep the dream alive …..”

Have an interesting take?

The team led by the LIV Golf Pro managed to beat the likes of Crushers GC and Stinger GC. The squad registered an overall figure of 5-under to clinch the title of champions at the event. The win wasn’t enough to impress many in the community as they commented, “Wouldn’t put fireballs in that category, but that’s just me.” The user was hesitant to compare the 4-man squad to the 11-man team at the EURO Cup.

Wimbledon is the oldest and the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. The Euro Cup, on the other hand, is a tournament that is organized by the Union of European Football Associations to determine Europe’s champion team. Comparing the two prestigious tournaments to the Saudi-backed men’s league did not sit well with yet another fan. They also responded with the comment, “Maybe an exhibition golf tournament is not quite up there with Wimbledon and EURO2024.” Regardless of the emotions with which he made the remarks, not many in the sporting community agreed with the golfer. What do you think? Did Garcia’s comments go a bit too far or was he in the right?
