Luke Donald will be leading the Europeans at the 2025 Bethpage Ryder Cup in New York. Donald’s successful run as the captain in October proved to be the reason behind his return for the 45th edition. Team Europe defeated the Americans in quite a dominant manner in Marco Simone, Italy. With 16.5-11.5, Europeans led their teams to victory on their home turf.
The victory could be dedicated to its newest set of players Nicolai Hojgaard and Ludvig Aberg, making their debut in the Ryder Cup. The captain was asked if his decision to be back was because of the bunch of new players on the team. Donald replied by saying that although the players had done well for themselves, initially, the dream was to get a 12 players-working team without much expectation.
However, as the Ryder Cup approached, the players “upped their game”. Particularly talking about Hojgaard and Aberg, Donald said, “It was great to see the guys like Ludvig and Nicolai and some other guys really step up when it came up to the crunch time in Ryder Cup.” The 4 times Ryder Cupper was initially unsure of their potential, however, they proved his choices right and took the trophy home.
Furthermore, he commented on the recent victories by the two and said, “It was extremely gratifying for me as a captain,” that his players went on to play better. He also shared how the Ryder Cup boosted his confidence and allowed him to hone his golfing skills. Recently, Aberg had his maiden victory at the RSM Classic while Nicolai won the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

The reason behind Aberg and Nicolai’s captain pick
Both the Swede and Dane were the captain’s choice for the Ryder Cup, as Aberg had done exceptionally in just four months of debut. Donald called him “a generational player,” while choosing him. On the other hand, Hojgaard had the “most impressive” statistics a week prior to the Ryder Cup, which resulted in his selection for the 2023 Ryder Cup.
