The golf world has been waiting with bated breath for what feels like an eternity for the PGA Tour and LIV Golf to put their differences aside and join forces. But despite the obvious benefits, the rivalry between Greg Norman and Jay Monahan continues to stall the process. Norman recently opened up about the frustrating stalemate, sharing his thoughts in an exclusive interview with Sports Illustrated.
Greg Norman is fed up with the stalled merger between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour. The golf legend feels like things should have been resolved ages ago. Norman’s frustration stems from the unnecessary complexity surrounding the potential union and he believes that joining forces would make life easier for everyone involved. But despite the obvious benefits, the rivalry between Norman and Monahan continues to stall the process.
“I can only speak on LIV’s behalf and we’re moving forward irrespective… Would it make things easier? Yes, it would,” Norman said, emphasizing the potential benefits of a merger. He also expressed frustration at the delay, calling it “a simple fix” that has been complicated by Monahan’s actions. “Knowing where we are today… Knowing the acceptance of what LIV Golf is today. Why did it have to be that way?” Norman wondered.

As Norman reflected on the past three years, he couldn’t help but feel a sense of regret. “You sit back and see all the people in the industry who created this angst. I just wish I could go back in time and revisit the start. And knowing what they know would they have done things differently? I bet they would have,” Norman said, his tone tinged with disappointment. Recently Norman’s son, Greg Norman Jr. replied to a fan asking him about when the merger was going to happen and wrote, “No idea… ask Jay”.
For what it’s worth… I’ve been preaching for awhile that LIV should absolutely open up weekly qualifiers for a People’s Team… a team that anyone can qualify for. If you play well, you stay on the team, and the general public can participate in shared ownership and governance https://t.co/PdW6M5Bk1G

Greg Norman’s son, Norman Jr. just added his voice to the outcry against the PGA Tour’s contentious plan to scrap Monday qualifiers. And he’s not just complaining – he’s proposing a game-changing alternative for LIV Golf. The younger Norman has long advocated for a revolutionary new team format that would turn the traditional golf hierarchy on its head.

Imagine a “People’s Team” where anyone can qualify and earn a spot, with the public invited to share ownership and governance. It’s a wild idea, but one that could create Cinderella stories and electrify the sport. “For what it’s worth, I’ve been preaching for a while that LIV should absolutely open up weekly qualifiers for a People’s Team. A team that anyone can qualify for. If you play well, you stay on the team, and the general public can participate in shared ownership and governance”, he said.
With LIV Golf star Cam Smith also pushing for innovation, it seems the PGA Tour’s loss could be LIV’s gain. As the golf world watches, one thing’s clear: change is coming, and it’s going to be exciting. What are your views on this ongoing tussle? Let us know your views in the comment section below!
