As you might have heard, Rory McIlroy will feature in a new docu-series. The production was kept under wraps for months until the teaser was released. The five-part docu-series looks at the making of Boston Common Golf, the TGL team that McIlroy owns and is also a part of. This marks the second such docu-series in recent years. With interest in Golf rising considerably, here are five other such series and documentaries that you can watch:
Full Swing (2023)
Netflix’s two-part (so far) series has created quite the waves. The first season hooked many to the game; the second one just raised the expectations. From Keegan Bradley’s emotional moments to a never-before-seen look at the 2023 Ryder Cup dust-up, Full Swing also caused some controversies, as a few USA players were allegedly opposed to letting cameras inside the locker room. Nevertheless, it’s one of these series that gives you an insider view that very others could afford around sports teams.

Loopers: The Long Walk (2019)
An ideal caddie is supposed to be silent and stay behind the limelight. But to outsiders, that often leads to the misconception that caddies only carry bags. Loopers breaks that perception as it examines golfers’ deep relationship with their bagman. A moment is also given to how a Stanford dropout changed the image of Golf and, in turn, helped caddies financially.
Just an anecdote: Tiger Woods also stood up for Steve Williams when he was asked to leave a course unless he wore a pair of pants instead of shorts. An added bonus: long-time golfer, and Hollywood Icon, Bill Murray narrates the story. Oh, and you also get to witness some of the most beautiful courses on both sides of the Pond.

A less heralded one but a fascinating documentary about Champion Golfers. The docu-series about former Open champions looks at the stars and their careers. In the very first episode, Tiger Woods talked about his two-decade-long career, his parents, early childhood, and what the Open means to him. The interviews also feature the moments from their Open Championship triumphs. The short episodes offer never-before-heard stories from the Champion Golfer of the Year.
Shark (2022)
Here is a documentary about a man who is now in the crosshairs of many. Not that he wasn’t before, which is why the ESPN documentary on Greg Norman makes it a compelling watch. Jason Hehir, the director of the Last Dance, was also involved in this project. The documentary looks at Norman’s near-misses—which marked his career more than his victories—from the 1986 Masters to the 1996 one.
The most defining moment of this documentary is Norman rewatching the infamous final round of 1996., also visited ANGC to recreate some shots that he played. The documentary even moved Rory McIlroy to text him after watching. “Hopefully it reminds everyone of what a great golfer you were,” McIlroy wrote in a lengthy text that he later recounted in an interview with the Irish Independent.

Tiger (2021)
This 2021 series is based on a book by Jeff Benedict and Armen Keteyian. Aired on HBO as a two-part miniseries, the documentary explores the struggles of Tiger Woods and how he overcame them. The 15-time major champion is, however, not directly present in the series. Rather, it looks at Woods’s exploits through archival footage and lets others speak about the man and the myth.
The documentary is dotted with interviews with sports journalists, caddy, and even his ex-girlfriend. Ultimately, it’s not so much a documentary about the man as it is about the legend surrounding him. Tiger (2021) tries to decode the myth of an 82-time PGA Tour winner who means to Golf as much as what Golf means to him.

Aside from these few, there is a documentary on Tiger Woods’s 2019 Masters triumph. ‘The 2019 Masters: A Sunday Unlike Any Other,’ recounts the famous Sunday from Augusta National five years ago. On the other hand, Sky Sports also created a documentary on Woods’s fifth Green Jacket, titled ‘Tiger Woods: Back’. If you are more interested in golf history, then ‘Uneven Fairways’ digs deep into the rise of African American golfers into the sport.
