Max Homa, amidst the Ryder Cup hype, is on the verge of creating history at the upcoming Fortinet Championship in California. The tournament is important for his Ryder Cup team-mate Justin Thomas for a totally different reason.
Homa, if he wins the Fortinet Championship, will achieve a very rare feat while Thomas’ performance — if it’s satisfactory — can please the under-fire Zach Johnson a little ahead of the all-important Ryder Cup. Let’s dive into the story.

The Fortinet Championship on the PGA Tour is set to kick off next week, and the spotlight is firmly on the 6-time PGA Tour champion Max Homa. Having reigned supreme at the Silverado Resort and Spa’s North Course, a vast 7,123-yard, par-72 track, for two years straight, Homa is on the prowl for a hat-trick win on familiar territory.
A victory this year would mark his third consecutive Fortinet Championship win. Last time Steve Stricker had achieved the feat at the John Deere Classic from 2009-2011. In a recent post by Fortinet, Max Homa confidently states, “I am excited to defend my 2021 and 2022 title at the Fortinet Championship next week, See you there.”
The Fortinet Championship will not be short of stars with Justin Thomas and US Ryder Cup skipper Zach Johnson also in the fray. Post Napa’s spectacle, all eyes will turn to the Ryder Cup in Rome, to the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club.
While Homa is eyeing a rare feat, Justin Thomas is determined to bounce back after an underwhelming 2022-23 PGA Tour season. While he didn’t make the FedEx Cup Playoffs, a first in his career, his prowess and credibility secured him a captain’s pick for the 2023 US Ryder Cup team to the disappointment of many.
