Nelly Korda says family isn't enough—Do you agree that success requires more than just family support?

Nelly Korda and Lexi Thompson are two of the most celebrated golfers in the world. Both have had their share of ups and downs and are still going strong. If anyone had told you at the beginning of this year that Thompson would be hanging her clubs this year, you would not have believed it. Similarly, did anyone think that Korda would write her name in history and clinch five consecutive wins? We’re sure no one thought that, but both things happened. The golfers are now operating on a different wavelength, and their recent revelations reflect that.

Korda reflected on the importance of a good team in a golfer’s career at the pre-tournament presser for the AIG Women’s Open. She said, “Not just family, but having a great support system when it comes to friends—your own team around you is super important.” The support she has received from the team that is with her, especially in the highs and lows of the sport, is what she cherishes.

Nelly Korda has been very fortunate to have Jason McDede as her caddy, who has been instrumental in helping her navigate her way to success through the LPGA Tour. Recalling how they are on the course, Korda said they are like “yin and yang.” With their continuous banter, Korda said of McDede as her “best bud” on the course. All in all, the two have spent six years together, and the 2024 season is the seventh year of their partnership. McDede was also with her during many of her important triumphs, including her gold medal win at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Korda is very close to her family and participates in the PNC Championship with her father, Petr Korda. He even used to caddy for her when she was an amateur golfer. Korda shared that it’s not just family who plays an integral role in success, but everyone else as well who helps you on the days you don’t feel your best, as golf is a very challenging sport.

Her acknowledgment that her team assists “those are the people that recharge my batteries” is a testimony that even the brightest need assistance to keep shining and moving forward. While Korda remains the most successful player, there are always a lot of people behind every winning trophy. What is the scenario with Lexi Thompson?

What are Lexi Thompson’s retirement plans?

As Nelly Korda keeps an eye on what it is like to be at the top, Lexi Thompson is thinking about life beyond the leaderboard. Thompson had already revealed her intention to retire after the 2024 LPGA season. She also shed light on a big change in her life that she expects to happen soon. “I’ll be 30 next year, so settle down, get married, have a family. That’s my No. 1 priority,” Thompson said. For a golfer who turned professional at the age of 15 and has been in the limelight for almost half of her age, this is a new phase that many of her fans might have anticipated. She has always been the kind of person who does not like to be in the spotlight, hence keeping her personal life away from it.
