The golf world eyes Zach Johnson as he is about to make the important announcement of the captain’s picks on Tuesday. And the rumor mills are already churning out one wild theory after another on who could be on the list.
And, based on the latest news, two big names that have been finalized by Johnson to be his strong allies on the course next month are Justin Thomas and a LIV defector. There is another big LIV name who was dreaming of a Ryder Cup place. It’s Bryson DeChambeau but he may not be as lucky as the other LIV defector. Let’s dive into the story.

The list of contenders for a spot in the Ryder Cup team is a long one. From the PGA Tour Players to LIV golfers, everyone is praying for a chance on the team. And those who can’t make it through automatic qualifications will have to rely on the captain’s picks.
Before the big announcement, two big names appear to have got the go-ahead. As per the latest report from The Guardian, Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka have been finalized as captain’s picks. Thomas has not had a good year and needed Johnson’s favor.
Thomas has played in the Cup twice and was in touch with with Zack Johnson as the captain himself revealed some days ago. Looks like Johnson is willing to overlook Thomas’s poor form in favor of his previous performances.
The LIV team also got lucky as defector Brooks Koepka is expected to be joining Thomas in Rome next month. Koepka has had a good year but because of his connection with LIV Golf, there were very few PGA tournaments he could play in and score enough points for automatic qualification since the Saudi-backed league is not affiliated with the OWGR as of now. Though his foe-turned-friend Bryson DeChambeau was also in the Ryder Cup race, at present it looks like Koepka has won the race.
Bryson DeChambeau’s dreams suffer as Koepka takes the lead
Koepka’s win at the PGA Championship and his second finish at the Masters Championship are coming to his aid as he has been reported to be the second hot pick for the Cup over DeChambeau. DeChambeau was over the moon after winning the LIV Bedminster event earlier this month where he shot a marvelous 58 in the final round.

After winning his first LIV Tournament, he said: “Look, I’ve played in a couple of Ryder Cups and I would love to represent my country, there’s no doubt about that. I feel like I’m in a good place to be able to do that.”
But DeChambeau was also okay with watching the match sitting at home rooting for Team USA. Now it looks like he has to do that while Thomas and Koepka will thank their lucky stars and try to justify their place in the Ryder Cup starting September 29.
