So, Scottie Scheffler is in the news. And not for his poor performances this season but because of a comment he made. What about? About LIV golfers and the great golf divide. Talking about the situation and missing “the competition,” the golfer said LIV has “got some pretty good players on their tour.”  But this comment came with some other remarks. The golfer blamed the LIV golfers for the divide in men’s professional golf. Back in February 2024, Scheffler recounted the moments that stood out the most to him and said, “You had some guys that left our tour and then sued our tour. That wasn’t really in great taste.” He added that he was alright with the golfers returning, but didn’t want it to happen smoothly. Did it end with that? No.

Fast forward to 2025 The PLAYERS Championship, and he repeated his point regarding the golf divide. “If the fans are upset, then look at the guys that left. We had a tour, we were all together and the people that left are no longer here. At the end of the day, that’s where the splintering comes from.” Certainly, the blame game is not recent.

Recently, Scheffler sat down for the Masters Tournament press conference. Scheffler, who has never had anything good to say about the Saudi-backed league, added another bit. “I wish some of those guys had stayed, but at the end of the day, they made their choice. They knew the consequences of that decision, and I’m not here to change their minds. I hold no ill will towards any of those guys that left. They did what they wanted to do, and you know, I can’t control their life. I’m not going to sit here and say they should have done something differently. They made their choice.” And that’s why fans are furious with him.

So, Dan Rapaport came in his defense. Rapaport explained that he was in call with Scheffler. Hence, he can attest that Scheffler’s tone “was polite, unbothered, the furthest thing from salty.” Additionally, hea slo made an interesting comment that transcripts lack tone, which is why he has shifted over video content with the players. “I totally understand where they’re coming from with being hesitant to give quotes in a presser that will be taken out of context, printed, and spread like it’s something it wasn’t.” Fans don’t think so.

However, despite his disdain for LIV, if there’s one player Scheffler misses playing with, Jon Rahm is certainly one of them. He mentioned the LIV golfer in an earlier question. The interviewer asked if Scheffler missed playing with Rahm now that he was with LIV. His answer? “Yeah, I definitely do. One of the great joyous of my career is going up against Jon. He’s a tremendous player, a tremendous talent.” But he still blames the LIV money. “I was definitely surprised to see him leave last year and I for sure miss playing against him.” Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Scheffler has brought up this Jon Rahm frustration.

Last year, Scheffler mentioned Rahm in an exclusive with the Sky Sports Golf Podcast. “To be completely honest, Jon was one of my favorite people to play against. We had some good battles throughout the years and I was pretty surprised that he decided to take the money and leave.” But what happened? Nothing. What causes the division in golf? Scheffler wants you to go and “ask those guys.” While we wait for the answer, let’s take a look at what’s going to amp up this tension.

According to FOX Sports, LIV Golf backers, responsible for merger talks with the PGA Tour, are reportedly planning to buy the Wentworth Golf Club in England, which serves as the headquarters for the DP World Tour and hosts the BMW PGA Championship. Currently, the Wentworth’s owners, the Reignwood Group, stated that the club is not for sale and hence no discussions took place with the Saudis. However, PIF is keen to expand its influence in British golf, especially considering that it’s soon going to face many expired contracts. In addition to this, the league is also considering acquiring Centurion Golf Club, the place where LIV held its first event back in 2022. However, if this deal goes through, it will undoubtedly put another strain on the two golf worlds despite the ongoing merger talk.

Additionally, according to the latest news, Jay Monahan has confirmed that “some hurdlers” are holding back the merger talks. Speaking ahead of The PLAYERS Championship, he added, “We’re doing everything we can to bring the two sides together.”

Undoubtedly, a lot has to happen before Jon Rahm and others can even think about returning to the PGA Tour. On that note, do you think Scottie Scheffler’s ire is justified?
