Jon Rahm shook the golf world when he confirmed his staggering move to LIV Golf. At first, the Spaniard had acclaimed the innovation and uniqueness of the breakaway league; however, now, unsurprisingly, he’s seeing that the multi-million-dollar contract he signed comes with some bizarre restrictions applied to the golfer.

The Saudi-backed circuit is famous for providing lucrative deals to lure players into the ‘Golf But Louder’ league. However, since its existence in 2022, the league has been known for its stringent contract conditions. And Rahm’s recent sightings once again confirm the reported restrictions.

Rahm made his first unofficial appearance in his home country, Spain, after his LIV move. The reigning Masters champion was in Bilbao to receive the Dama Bilbaina 2023 award. However, he was stunned to find the media presence in the audience.

When asked about giving an interview, the new LIV defector replied emphatically “no” and stated, “I am under very strict instructions not to do public events,” according to Reuters. Rahm also notified the press that there will be no interviews from his side until “February” because he is “not allowed to.”

The recent appearance of the LIV golfer confirmed the reported contractual clauses of the LIV Golf that have been out previously. One clause specifically states that the players are not allowed to give interviews without obtaining prior permission from the league, per Golf.com.

It is quite clear that although the breakaway league offers huge monetary benefits, the restrictions it imposes on its players are more ‘harsher’ than any the PGA Tour had for them. Interestingly, it’s not just a curb on their media exposure but also many other restrictions that they have to adhere to.

The backend clauses of signing with LIV Golf

When a golfer signs with LIV, they need to agree to many intricate details, among which are a few restrictions, which are as below:

  • While under contract with the league, the players have consented to the league’s use of their image when and how they want.
  • In addition to the given interview restrictions, the players are also ordered to refrain from creating any scandal or controversial remarks regarding any issue or individual.
  • Additionally, barring unforeseen circumstances, the players must participate in all league-scheduled events.
  • The players also have to wear the league’s apparel and logos in all events of the league and those out of the league as well, like the majors.
  • The pros also have to play in all Pro-Am and corporate events while under contract.
  • Another obligation that falls upon the Saudi-backed tour players is to try and recruit new players from different leagues and promote LIV Golf on social media.

Only once a pro agrees to all the above-known terms, and perhaps even more terms that are not made public, can they find themselves with the lucrative deal and the innovative league’s freedom that LIV offers. Are they small enough change for the millions in the Saudi League? Or too great a price? That’s for every pro to decide for themselves, of course. And it’s clear which of those it was for Rahm!
