Like mother, like son. This idiom is true to its core for William McGee, the young son of golf Hall of Famer Annika Sörenstam. Following the steps of his legendary mother, William has set out early on the path to carve his own identity and make big achievements in the world of golf.
The former champion may have retired but she is busy molding her son for a terrific career just like hers in golf. William has had a good coaching journey so far, learning from the best in the field. So it doesn’t come as a surprise that he has displayed exceptional golfing skills from a young age. And very soon, he will be playing in the PNC Championship 2023 in December.

Annika Sörenstam is continuously working on her little son’s career and her efforts are paying off. This year, William participated in the Drive, Chip & Putt event, a nationwide junior golf development competition for kids aged 7 to 15. The initiative is by the Master’s Tournament, the United States Golf Association, and the PGA of America. Young William has been getting the taste of golf on and off the course for some time now.
This week, Sorenstam appeared on the Bloomberg Business of Sports podcast, where she adoringly discussed how much her son is invested in golf. She said, “Well, our son, he’s 12. He loves to play…he plays the newest kid stuff. And, you know, there’s a little Drive, Chip & Putt, and…he’s played a few hurricane events. And it’s just a great, great sport to be part of as a family.”
Sorenstam also makes practice interesting by playing with her son. “I play a lot with him in practice, which is good, because he’s motivating me, he’s getting me at a dose a little better. So we’re having fun doing that,” she said. But since he’s so young, as a mother, she worries about what the future holds for him. As far as golf is concerned, they have fun and learn together. “As far as golf. I just want him to have a good time. And I think as a parent, I think you just wake up in the morning, you want them to be healthy and happy and pursue what they enjoy. And it’s fun that it’s golf because we know a little bit about it.”
Annika also expressed that sometimes she wishes he would listen a little bit more. Whenever she says she knows a little bit about the game, Will is like like, “I got it, Mom.”

Early golf journey of William McGee
Like any good player, junior Sorenstam has to pass hurdles to prove his mettle. The 12-year-old is often compared to Charlie Woods, son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods. The 14-year-old is also making a career in golf like his father. Will has already started appearing in competitions like U.S. Kids Golf and Space Coast Golf Tournament. Last year, he also accompanied his mother to the U.S. Women’s Open Golf Championship at the Cradle Golf Course and aced the fifth hole there.

On this sweet achievement of Will, he was also presented with a pin flag and an engraved bag from the club. He also attained a 6-foot birdie at PNC Championship in December 2022. Annika couldn’t be happier and prouder, as she gets to be her son’s mentor and guide and pass on her golden legacy.
