The 44th Ryder Cup is just days away, and it fills both players and fans with excitement. However, amidst all the commotion, Team Europe’s captain, Luke Donald, has made a surprising decision. He has hinted that the world’s No.2 and No.3 golf players may sit out more than usual.
Luke is worried about the freshness of his players and intends to provide them with rest. However, a former US Open champion responded, claiming he has trained himself to be “ready” for a challenging event.

The 2023 Ryder Cup will take place at Marco Simone in Italy’s Rome. The course is famous for being harsh and challenging. As the temperatures are soaring high, the concerns of Europe’s captain cannot be diminished. The 45-year-old captain aims to maintain the player’s freshness until the end, emphasizing the importance of singles on the ultimate day. He does not wish to compromise on 12 points.
The ex-US Open champion, Matt Fitzpatrick, agrees with the captain and is confident that he can handle any future obstacles. Fitzpatrick, commenting on the harsh course, said, “It definitely is, it’s a tough golf course it really is, it’s hilly, very, very hilly, and obviously the weather looks to be hot as well.”
Furthermore, the golfer added that choosing to not have players play all five sessions might be a ‘smart’ decision but “if they’re playing really well you want that confidence going into every single game so some players might have to.”
Matt has been training for the last three months for this exact moment. He deemed himself to be ready and prepared. Revealing his plans, he said, “All being well, I will play really well, and be ready. It’s something that I spoke to my trainer about three months ago and then just try to put a plan in place to work on my fitness levels just in case it does happen, then I’ve got a better chance of recovering.”

The repercussions of missing Rory McIlroy
Matt may be correct. The most experienced player McIlroy has won twelve out of the twenty-four Ryder Cup matches he’s been part of. The Irish golfer has four Ryder Cup victories and is the ace player for the team. Despite the concern, will resting him reward the team? The decision might backfire for Team Europe.
Although Luke has made clear that the team understands the rationale behind his decision, few European players have successfully played all five sessions before.
