This weekend, the DP World Tour is hosting the Nedbank Golf Challenge, the venue for which is the legendary golfer Gary Player’s course. Always hosted at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa, it gives Player a chance to bring his favorite sport to his homeland.
And returning for the fight for his trophy is two-time defending champion Tommy Fleetwood, who will be fighting the hardest for the $6 million prize purse. Being his senior, Player found a golden opportunity to pull his leg.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood has already won the tournament twice in 2021 and 2022. This year, he is hoping to make a hat-trick with a third win. At the venue, Gary Player even had the opportunity to catch up with him. The veteran even had some fun with him by reminding him how his country lost to Player’s country in the Rugby World Cup.
Welcoming him back for the event, Player wrote on X, “It was fantastic catching up with our two-time defending Nedbank Golf Challenge champion, Tommy Fleetwood…I had to throw a jab about South Africa’s victory over England in the Rugby World Cup. It’s always a pleasure to spend time with him as he’s such a gentleman to me and the fans.” Gary also wished Fleetwood good luck for this weekend. “I’m thrilled this tournament will always hold a special place in his heart. I wish Tommy the best of luck this week. Will he three-peat?”
Last week was the finale of the Rugby World Cup 2023, which was won by South Africa. The winning team, The Springboks, beat New Zealand by one point, 12-11 in Paris on Saturday, November 4. Before that, they left England far behind. So much so that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a public holiday on December 15 to celebrate the win. After such a historic victory, no wonder Gary was poking fun at Fleetwood. Though he is full of support for Tommy for the Nedbank Golf Challenge.
