As Charlie Woods Strives to Uphold Tiger Woods’ Legacy, Here Are Some Not-So Successful Father-Son Stories of Golf

Golf has been blessed with many father-son duos gracing the greens with equal prowess. From Young Tom Morris filling his father’s shoes in the 1800s to today’s Charlie Woods following Tiger Woods on the greens, sons have followed in their father’s footsteps to emulate their father’s legacy.

However, only a handful of them have found immense success in their father’s profession. Although Charlie Woods looks well on his way to having a stellar career ahead, let’s take a look at the father-son duos where the picture was a little different. 

The not-so-successful father-son duos in golf

Jack and Gary Nicklaus

The legendary golfer netted 18 Major wins in his entire career, a record yet to be bested by any PGA Tour pros. Tiger Woods comes close second with 15 Major to his name. The 73-time PGA Tour winner is one of the all-time greats in golf.

His son, Gary Nicklaus mostly played in Europe and on mini-tours. In 1999, he finally made it through the PGA Tour’s qualifying tournament. The most notable achievement in his short career was coming a close second to Phil Mickelson in 2000 before hanging up his boots in 2003.  In 2019, the 54-year-old golfer turned pro again to try his luck on senior golf.

Craig and Kevin Stadler

Craig Stadler has 13 PGA Tour titles under his belt. One of the 13 PGA Tour victories came at the 1984 Masters as well. His son, Kevin Stadler, followed in his footsteps and debuted as a professional golfer at the young age of 22. However, he failed to live up to his father’s legacy.

In 2014, Kevin became the first son of a Masters champion to play in a Masters. Although Stadler came inside the top ten, finishing eighth, this has been the only key highlight of his career. Other than this 43-year-old gofer has bagged only one win on the PGA Tour and the European Tour. 

Julius and Guy Boros

Julius Boros was the winner of the 1952 and 1963 U.S. Open. At 48, he became the oldest golfer to win a Major when he won the 1968 PGA Championship. That record has since been broken when 50-year-old Phil Mickelson bagged the 2021 PGA Championship. 

The Hall of Famer also wrote an instruction book, ‘Swing Easy, Hit It Hard.’ His son, Guy Boros failed to match up to his father’s legacy with only one PGA Tour win in 1993 at the Greater Vancouver Open.

Although Charlie Woods is still fairly young, he has bagged two titles this season and will look for his third this November. Let’s look at where he stands. 

Where do Charlie and Tiger Woods stand in all these?

Charlie Woods has been turning heads ever since he debuted at the PNC Championship with his father. Now a kid of 14, Woods Jr. has two tournament wins under his name. 

Earlier this year, the teenage Woods won the first tournament this season at the Notah Begay III Junior Championship where Tiger Woods caddied for him. After that, the young prodigy also won the West Coast High School Tournament in the South Florida PGA Junior Tour. 

Tiger Woods and his son will probably grace the greens again at the PNC Championship later this year. However, everything depends on how fast senior Woods can recover from his injury.
