Arnold “Daniel” Palmer was an American professional golfer who is considered to be one of the most influential players of all time. He won various events on the PGA Tour as well as the PGA Tour Champions. The golf legend held a record of keeping it clean throughout his career. However, there was this one time when Palmer made a bet no one could forget, not even the golfer himself.

Arnold Palmer makes an unforgettable bet
‘The King’ fell in love with his wife Winnie when he was still in his early golfing days. And it was not just some random dating scenario. The player had decided to get engaged to the love of his life. But since he didn’t have a lot to go by then, he faced trouble affording an engagement ring to gift his beloved wife.

On finding no other option, Palmer was forced to borrow money from his friends to make the purchase. However, he was not very keen on paying off his debt anytime soon. When Palmer’s friends asked him if he wanted to come along to New Jersey’s Pine Valley Gold Club with them, he didn’t deny it.

On hitting the links, Palmer decided to offer his friends a crazy bet. According to the rules of the bet, Palmer would receive $100 for each stroke he wrapped up under 70. And in case he didn’t play that well, he would have to pay $100 from his pocket for each stroke he finished over 80. Palmer used the same technique and made over $5000 to recover from his debt.

Palmer passed away at 87.
Arnold Palmer passed away at the age of 87 in the year 2016. Palmer’s longtime friend and agent, Alastair Johnston, said that Palmer died due to complications from heart problems. The golfer won seven major championships in his career, along with claiming the Masters title four times.

The USGA made a statement as a tribute to the great golfer: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Arnold Palmer, golf’s greatest ambassador.” “Arnold Palmer will always be a champion, in every sense of the word,” the statement said. “He inspired generations to love golf by sharing his competitive spirit, displaying sportsmanship, caring for golfers and golf fans, and serving as a lifelong ambassador for the sport.“
