Recently, the PGA Tour-PIF deal became the epicenter of a major drama! Two prominent players in the traditional league, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, exchanged a few opposing viewpoints. The reason for this kerfuffle was Jay Monahan and Co. recently shaking hands with SSG.
The two had varying opinions on the PGA Tour-PIF deal following the $3 billion investment from SSG. However, the two claim all is well and good between them after they talked over the call. But are all the embers between them doused? Let’s look into Spieth’s pre-AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am press conference to find out.

During the press conference at Pebble Beach, the topic of Spieth’s clash with his Irish counterpart came up. When asked about the potential merger with PIF and how the Irish golfer is welcoming LIV players to return, he had a diplomatic reaction while confirming everything was well between the two PGAT pros.
“That’s Rory’s viewpoint. I could name some guys with the same viewpoint, I could name some guys with a totally opposite viewpoint. So it’s certainly mixed on how players feel about that, that’s what I think,” said Spieth.
Furthermore, the American golfer also believes the investment from SSG gives an edge to the traditional league now. During the press conference, Spieth openly stated that the deal with PIF is still in midair while SSG has become its ally.

So if PIF wants to continue talking about the merger, it should think about “coming in on terms that our members like and/or the economic terms are at or not beyond SSGs.” But these very views were the reason McIlroy begged to differ from the American golfer.

When Spieth first shared these views, it caused an extreme reaction from McIlroy. The former board member left a group chat containing the top PGAT players. However, Spieth soon followed up with the Irish golfer to win back to his side.
McIlroy later said that Saudis have ample amounts of money that can hugely benefit the golf world. He further said this criticism from Spieth could lead to adverse reactions from PIF. “But if I were PIF and I was hearing that coming from here the day after doing this SSG deal, it wouldn’t have made me too happy, I guess?” said McIlroy.
