The Ryder Cup is all gone, with the European side badly thrashing the US squad. The losing team’s captain is bearing the full weight of the defeat on his own shoulders, and the US will now have to wait another two years before they can avenge. There have been discussions going on as to who will lead the US in 2025. And the first name that has surfaced is none other than golf’s absolute legend, Tiger Woods.

Woods is one of the frontrunners for the role. Even though he missed this year’s biennial event because of his health issues, he was very much involved in the game. And he could be the missing piece of the puzzle the US squad missed this year as this captain recalls how pairing against Woods in the President Cup was the biggest error he made. Woods should find comfort in these comments.

Pitting Ancer against Woods was a big mistake

Ryder Cup’s younger cousin, President Cup, may not be as electrifying but it is also one of the greatest glories for any nation. The format is exactly like the Ryder Cup, but there is no European side in it. The game is between the US side and the international side.

In 2019, Woods was the captain of the US side, and Australian golfer Ernie Els was leading the opponents. Though the internationals were dominating early on, in single matches, the US took the lead and won by 16–14. Playing captain Woods finished 3-0-0 on day three after winning against Abraham Ancer, and became the first playing captain in the President Cup to go undefeated in his team’s victory.

Even though Els gave it his all throughout those games and was happy with his captaincy, his regrettable choice to pair Ancer against Woods still weighs heavily on him. Ancer performed admirably in the competition, earning 3.5 points during the first four sessions. Long games must have worn him out. Therefore it was not a good idea to pit him against Tiger Woods. “I could have played him against anyone but Tiger,” Golf.com quoted him as saying.

Well, these stories are what make Woods the ideal candidate to lead the Ryder Cup. But that can wait; Woods is currently preoccupied with expanding his own league.

On January 9th, the new tech-infused league, TGL, will officially launch. Public information regarding the format, teams, players, and investors is currently available. Woods and Rory McIlroy’s brainchild TGL has had a breakthrough deal with Disney’s ESPN a few days back. The matches will be televised on the scheduled ESPN networks.

The six-team competition will feature 18 PGA golfers in all. Up to this point, sixteen names have been made public. Two spots are still vacant. Since all the players are from Florida and these LIV golfers are residents of Florida, there are rumors that Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson may fill the open spots.
