Despite the criticism surrounding his role as CEO of LIV Golf, the legacy of Greg Norman cannot be understated. He has won 89 professional tournaments, including 20 PGA Tour tournaments, across an illustrious career. His hauls even include two major championship victories, both at the Open Championship in 1986 and 1993. But would prime Greg Norman stand a chance against the likes of Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus?
Could Greg Norman beat Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus?
In a candid interview a few years ago, Norman was asked whether the best version of the ‘Shark’ could stand invincible in the face of legends such as Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. “You probably get asked this a lot, but let’s say at your prime and on the best day you’ve played, who wins a round of golf – you, Jack Nicklaus, or Tiger?”

In reply, Norman decided to steer clear of any troubles but labeled all the names, including his, as “elite players.” “With the elite of the elite golfers it’s up in the air on any given day,” he said. “It depends on who wakes up feeling great, feeling loose, and feeling the most confident.”
Norman and his embarrassing record of choking
As Norman highlighted in his response, the player who holds his stead at the right moments would be the winner. Unfortunately, though, while he has won several golf tournaments in his career, the 67-year-old has fallen victim to his struggles at the end of the weekend.
His list of chokes in major championships is astounding. Norman was well within the reach of a Green Jacket at the 1996 Masters Tournament. Alas, his six-shot lead evaporated away as the golfer put on one of his worst shows ever to shoot a final-day 78.
1986 wasn’t kind either. While he secured the Open Championship, his inaugural major, at Turnberry, it doesn’t paint Norman’s story of dominance. That year, he led at every major championship on Saturday night, or the ‘Saturday Slam’ as it infamously became known.
Norman shot a 76 on Sunday to lose the PGA Championship in 1986 to one-time major championship winner Bob Tway. His hopes of a US Open win turned sour as a score of 75 in the last round dropped his rank from first to tied at 12th. The Masters evaded him too, with Jack Nicklaus pouncing on Norman’s bogey on the 18th to win his last Green Jacket.
