Data has become a new weapon in sports analysts’ arsenals. In golf, data is revolutionizing the game, with players and analysts resorting to statistics to devise strategies for their players and teams. Just last week, even the Team USA captain relied heavily on analytics to chalk out a team plan for the Solheim Cup.
For fans, too, this provides an interesting avenue for understanding each player’s gameplay. But the stat that popped up on the screen when Jon Rahm was going to take his tee shot on the 9 hole at today’s Ryder Cup singles didn’t have the same effect; in fact, it cracked fans up!
An ‘insightful’ stat prompted a slew of quirky tweets from fans

“The team that drives further wins this hole 50% of the time.” When this graphic came up on screen, probably a few were puzzled; others were quick to find the inanity in it. Andy Johnson of The Fried Egg Golf podcast shared a screenshot with a sarcastic jab: “What an insightful graphic. No matter how far you drive it, you have a 50% of winning.”
And clearly, Johnson wasn’t the only one left dumbfounded by the absurd data-driven facts on the screen! Fans were quick to share their own humorous takes on this. Justin Ray of the Twenty First Group was aghast that this made it to television, commenting, “I’ve no words.”
Another user, taking a sardonic jibe at the broadcasting channel, commented, “Data finally making its way to broadcast. The effort was there at least.” A small consolation for sports intelligence fans, perhaps.

Zach Johnson’s men are still on the back foot at Marco Simone. They need to rack up points quickly to make a comeback before the game slips out of their hands. At this juncture, how insightful will the USA captain find this stat? Probably thinking about that, this user tweeted, “ZJ sees it, need to tell his players to hit pitching wedge.”
Not all the comments took that line, though. Genuinely appreciating the efforts, one user noted that they should have added three sets of data for wins, losses, and ties: “Wins, losses and ties are possible. They should have provided all three.” Probably the user was pointing to the fact that the stat ignored the chances of halved holes.
Amidst all the golf-related comments, one user took a completely different path. Making an exception, this user was more bothered by a grammatical error. Pointing out that they used the wrong ‘further’, this user wrote, “And it should be ‘farther’.” A little pedantic of them, some would say!
But this wasn’t the first time fans lashed out at the broadcasters. Rather, since the very first day, fans have been annoyed with another important broadcasting issue.

Commercials prioritized over the Ryder Cup, leaves USA fans outraged
USA fans, some of whom were up at 1 a.m. to catch the matches live, pointed out the lack of screen time given to actual matches. Instead, according to them, commercials are eating up the match time.
Many fans pointed out that there was not even a total of two hours of coverage during the foursome matches. A live scorecard shows the live standings of each player. Yet, the lack of coverage means that most viewers are bereft of any context for that score.
