John Daly, the two-time major winner is more widely known for his way of life. Daly lived a certain carefree lifestyle. From alcohol to cigarettes to junk food, he does it all. He is often seen on the course with a cigarette between his lips. And almost every story about him involves him drinking. It is safe to say that Long John leads a wild life.

But things once kicked up a notch when the police showed up at Hooters to take Daly in. They claimed later that the PGA Tour veteran was “extremely intoxicated and uncooperative.”

Daly’s infamous run-in with the police left him worried about his partnership

Bunkered back in 2017 covered John Daly’s wildest moments. Atop the list was the time when the police had detained Daly one night. In 2008, Daly was at his favorite restaurant, Hooters. John Daly was noted to be extremely drunk, by the police when they arrived. He refused to cooperate with them either. So they took him back to the station, where they kept him overnight since he had no source of transport. Daly was fortunately not arrested, and was released once he was sober.

Although Daly’s criminal record remained unaltered after the night’s incidents, fans were also interested in what Hooters had to say. Hooters had made no comment to the press since Daly had been taken into custody. The famous restaurant chain had partnered with Daly in 2005 and had stood by him despite his declining performances.

Long John knew the incident didn’t bode well for him. He was furious with himself for his actions, especially since Hooters had been mixed up in the controversy. He said, “I’ve never had an incident at Hooters. I hate that their name is brought into it this way.” The golf pro went on to say that he was aware that he might have to let him go. He stated, “[They] probably have to terminate me because of the negative publicity.”

Fortunately for the PGA star, Hooters handled the incident with a cool head. To them, the PGA Tour veteran wasn’t just another endorser. Daly had a genuine love for the restaurant, and they recognized that when they signed with him.

When they agreed to work with him, they were aware of the risks; after all, Daly’s carefree habits had been constant for decades. The restaurant chain, much to his relief, didn’t terminate John. Daly not being officially arrested that night certainly helped his case also.
