The Masters Tournament is one of the four major championships in men’s golf. Since it is a prestigious event, every competitor tries to concentrate only on winning the tournament. However, such was not the case with Phil Mickelson, who is considered to be one of the best golfers of all time.
Nicknamed Lefty, Mickelson once invested his time and money in a sport other than golf during the Masters week in 2001. He wanted to place bets on who would be winning in the Super Bowl XXXVI, taking some time off from the major event. Notably, he was confident of winning it since he already had the experience of winning a massive amount the previous season.

Mickelson is a fun-loving person, and one of the fun activities he loves and takes pride in is placing bets before the Super Bowl. In fact, he has even won $440,000 on a $20,000 futures wager at 22-1 during the Super Bowl XXXV, which the Baltimore Ravens won.
“The best defense in the history of the game,” the proud golfer explained why he picked Ravens to place the bet. “And a running offense that runs the clock out and doesn’t turn the ball over,” he added.
Interestingly, as much as he is fond of placing bets, he enjoys sharing the news and celebrating it with everyone in his family. According to the golfer, he took his beloved wife, Amy Mickelson, his parents, and his in-laws to Vegas in a private jet to collect his $440,000!
“It was awesome,” a super-thrilled Mickelson revealed. “We’re definitely going to do it again,” he added. Notably, all these conversations about placing bets were happening during a major week, yet, he was not worried about winning the green jacket at Augusta National.
Did Lefty win the 2001 Masters?
Although he turned professional in 1992 and attained the title ‘one of the best,’ Mickelson didn’t have a major win when he appeared in the 2001 Masters. The golfer had a good chance of winning his first-ever major if were not for Tiger Woods, who snatched it away again.
