It has been a tremendous year for golf, to say the least. There have been brilliant tournaments, inspiring victories, heartbreaking losses, and some controversial news. The biggest headline maker has to be the much-talked-about and somewhat controversial merger between the DP World Tour, PGA Tour, and LIV Golf.

The media wanted a quote after the recently leaked documents revealed the entire framework of the agreement. And with the sport’s future still uncertain post-merger, Phil Mickelson has an opinion on how he anticipates his future in the sport to be.

Phil Mickelson finally broke his silence on joining LIV Golf and the merger on Wednesday during a media conference. This took place days before the LIV Golf Valderrama. This was his first public statement on the whole deal. Being the center figure of the LIV-PGA Tour war, fans and media outlets have been waiting for a statement for months now.

“I just can’t envision a better scenario for me as a player than playing out here on LIV,” He told reporters. “Rather than saying yes or no, I know that from a player’s experience, all of the difficulties and challenges and things that take a lot of excessive energy and output throughout the week have been fixed at LIV.”

The media has been waiting for a statement from Lefty for quite some time now. Just days after the merger came to light, he refused to talk to reporters at the Los Angeles Country Club after the U.S. Open. He had missed making the cut at the event and, moreover, claimed that he didn’t want to draw attention away from the major.

The reporters also asked the LIV star about his thoughts on the merger, to which he expressed his feeling of appreciation towards the unity of the leagues. He stated that this merger filled him with confidence about the future of the sport. Ending the statement, he added that he was more than optimistic about the direction professional golf was headed.

With 45 victories during his time on the PGA Tour, Mickelson was also asked about his return to the Tour. His answer was diplomatic, saying he didn’t feel the need to say publicly where his position stands right now. He would prefer to let things play out and eventually see where things go.
