The USGA and R&A recently decided to roll back golf balls for elite players in tournaments. While some professional golfers have no issues with the recent changes, Justin Thomas came out completely against it. In fact, he even called the USGA ‘selfish’ for their decisions. On the other hand, his ‘big brother’ Tiger Woods was once in support of reducing the flight distance of golf balls for pros!
Tiger Woods’ old statements contradict Justin Thomas’ stance about USGA’s recent announcement
Tiger Woods is certainly one of the most talented players in the field of golf. Although there is no comparison, Justin Thomas is also pretty skilled when it comes to playing some really spectacular shots in tournaments. Both Woods and Thomas share a beautiful bond on and off the course. And this has developed a certain respect between the two regarding their individual perspectives as well.

The two professionals have been on the same tangent with most of their golfing decisions. From staying back on the PGA Tour to calling out LIV Golf defectors for their choices, the duo has been rather consenting. However, they are still allowed to have their own stands about their own professional careers.
The recently announced golf ball changes by the USGA and R&A have been a topic of concern for numerous players. And Justin Thomas recently called out the organizations for being ‘harsh’ and ‘selfish’ with their decisions. However, this time, his best friend might have a different opinion about it.
Although there have been no recent statements by Tiger Woods about USGA’s rollback decision, his old statements make his perception extremely clear. One of the hosts from the Shotgun Start podcast recently shared a quote by the golf legend from 2017. And by his statements, Woods’ stand towards reducing the flight distance of balls for pros is clearly visible:

“Every professional would have to play a reduced-flight ball. Even if you played a pro member, you would have a reduced-flight ball for the pro… whereas the amateur, go ahead and make it fun, juice the golf balls up, juice the clubs up, and let them go have a great time. But at a professional level, I see no reason why we can’t have it very similar to where baseball has it right now”
Well, Justin Thomas might not agree with what Woods said back in 2017. And given that the GOAT himself hasn’t been able to play his best shots in his recent tournaments, there is a chance he might reconsider his old statements.
