Is Robert MacIntyre's new approach with his father a game-changer or just a desperate move?

Back pain struck again in the golf world! Just days after Hideki Matsuyama’s exit from the BMW Championship, a similar exit forced Robert MacIntyre to withdraw from the same field. His departure raised concerns about his fitness and form. But little did we know, he was already plotting his comeback—and it’s going to be a family affair.

As it turns out, MacIntyre’s been brewing up a special partnership. Martin Dempster broke the news on his X; he wrote, “NEW: Bob MacIntyre pairs up with dad once more—but both will have clubs in hand.” Dougie, who caddied for his son at the RBC Heritage, will now take to the course alongside his son in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship which will be played at the iconic Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland.

The 2-times PGA Tour champion had said to the Scotsman, “I’m incredibly thrilled to play with my dad in the team event. For us to play together in a proper championship at the Home of Golf is just amazing.” His words capture the sentimental value of the moment he is set to witness the playing experience with his father, who introduced him to golf on one of golf’s most revered courses.

It’s a reunion of sorts, as Robert MacIntyre and his father had previously teamed up at the RBC Canadian Open earlier this year which led to a maiden PGA Tour emotional victory. He finished at 16-under-264. However, this time they will be playing alongside each other in the Link Championship starting from October 3rd to 6th.

The 28-year-old recalled the Canadian Open win: “It was a very special moment for us when dad was on the bag in Canada and we won. Now we can see what we can do together with clubs in both our hands.” With fond memories of their past successes, the MacIntyres are eager to create new ones. As they prepare to take on the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, the stage is set for a thrilling competition. That’ll be an unforgettable experience for the father and the son.

But before that, the Tour Championship awaits the Scottish No. 1 player. Will he cling to his competitive spirit amid the back injury? However, if this goes on smoothly, the father-son duo could face a mother-son duo.

Robert MacIntyre and his dad vs. Fitzpatricks

The MacIntyres are poised for a special moment in golf; they’re not the only family duo making waves in the sport. Last year, Matt Fitzpatrick and his mom, Susan, dominated the course. They won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with a remarkable 35-under, five shots ahead of the runner-ups. Moreover, it was his mom’s second successive year partnering him on the Old Course.

With Matt Fitzpatrick winning the individual title in the championship, the Fitzpatricks became the first family to win the individual and team championships at St Andrews. Now, as Robert MacIntyre and his dad prepare to take on the same course, they’ll be aiming to create similar unforgettable memories.
