The PGA Tour has been going through huge changes lately. It was just last Tuesday when Tiger Woods took up his new role as the sixth player director of the PGA Tour policy board, and already several alterations have taken place before the playoffs, all intended for the 2024 PGA Tour calendar. Two noteworthy ones to mention are the introduction of the no-cut rule and sponsor exemptions.

Bryson DeChambeau makes a bold disclosure about the Saudi-backed league

It is already known that the PGA Tour has planned a lot of new things for its new season in 2024. Firstly, out of all the 36 tournaments, the 12 ‘ Designated Events’ have been rebranded as ‘Signature Events’ for the next year. And out of these dozen events, eight will have a no-cut system like LIV Golf, which has been actively supported by players like Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay. But the rest four still remain to have the cut system, one of which is the Genesis Invitational (hosted by Tiger Woods).

The second change is that four players will get free passes to these big field tournaments, called as sponsor exemption. Even these exemptions can go up to eight players, depending on the sponsors’ discretion. Now, amidst all this going on on the PGA Tour,  DeChambeau dropped a bombshell elucidating LIV Golf’s latest internal changes.

In a recent interview, DeChambeau hinted at possible changes in the LIV Golf League, saying, “There’s a lot of movement that can happen just like the NFL Draft can happen. That’s what we’re trying to eventually set up and make happen for golf as well.” Then he was cross-questioned, “So there’s PGA guys coming over LIV? ”

And in answer to this he said, “maybe Number No, you do that. Yeah. I’m not saying anything. Guys. Don’t put me in the corner.” He dropped clues about the possibility that more PGA Tour players might join LIV Golf. While concluding the discussion, he dropped another bomb, saying, “There may be two more teams being added. We don’t know.”And this means eight more new faces could be included in the two LIV teams.

Tiger Woods takes a stand against his old pal Rory McIlroy in notable fashion

The PGA Tour has already started planning for the next season. And some changes have been made to the format of the tournaments. Out of the 36 tournaments, 12 are the ‘Signature Events’. And out of these 12 events, only eight will have the latest no-cut system, while the remaining won’t. These four tournaments, which will follow the regular cut system after 36-holes, are the Players Championship, the Woods-hosted Genesis Invitational, the Memorial Tournament, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

In this debate over the cut format, Woods and McIlroy took two different sides. Woods said, “I still think that there needs to be a penalty for not playing well, and every event shouldn’t be always guaranteed 72 holes. I think that there should be a cut there,” giving his verdict in favor of the penalty system. And to counter this, McIlroy said, “The only reason no-cut events are a big deal is because LIV has come along.”
