It is common to hear mentors congratulate and praise their students when they both tie for second during a professional tournament. What isn’t common is hearing the mentor talk about raising their student’s rent. Xiyu “Janet” Lin said this hilarious thing during the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Lin is tied for second place in the ongoing LPGA Tour major. She is sharing this spot with another competitor she has mentored for the past four years. But the bond of mentorship doesn’t end on the grassy field; it extends to clogged-up toilets!

But who is this mysterious person that Lin wants to increase the rent for? It is none other than her student and current competitor, Ruoning Yin. The two have known each other for over four years, since 2019. Yin is also renting Lin’s old Orlando home. Additionally, she is hot off the heels of winning the DIO Implant LA Open at the start of the season. This put her up there with Shanshan Feng as the only other native Chinese LPGA Tour Winner. Along with the victory came a handsome payday of $262,500.

Needless to say, the landlord within Lin popped out during an interview, “After she wins, I’m like, I need to raise the rent. It was way too low for you now,” Lin said after Round 1 at Baltusrol.

Lin added while discussing the living arrangements, “Unfortunately, we’ve been dealing with some draining problems, so when I see her, I always feel so sorry, not with the golf, but it’s like the toilet is clogged or something.” Later, Lin said that the issue was resolved.

From an ambitious student to a tenant

Xiyu Lin met a young and ambitious Ruoning Yin at the 2019 Buick LPGA Shanghai. Yin approached her and asked how she could get into the LPGA. This was not something Lin expected from such a young player. Today at the $9,000,000 KPMG PGA Championship , Lin is not just Yin’s mentor and friend, but also her landlord. The two live around 20 minutes from each other and meet up every once in a while.
