Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy formed a new venture, TGL, which is set to commence next year in January 2024. The league is promised to be filled with advanced technology and something out of the ordinary.

ESPN has bagged the broadcasting rights of the league and is all for the experience these two have. However, a question that lingers is that PIF-backed LIV Golf did not get as much assistance as Tiger Woods-backed TGL. Was ESPN reluctant to trust LIV Golf?

TGL founded by Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and former NBC sports executive Mike McCarley has found its broadcaster. The announcement of Disney’s ESPN grabbing the broadcasting rights was made via the TGL website.

The executive VP of ESPN, Rosalyn Durant, got candid with the Hollywood Reporter in an exclusive interview. She shared why TGL can be trusted far more than other recent leagues. Highlighting the fan base of Woods and the investor’s trust put in him, Durant said, “Look at the partners he’s brought on board from Tiger and Rory, look at the investors that are connected to this business, look at the team owners there. It may be a new business concept, but these aren’t people new to business and new to the profession and to the sport of golf.”

Comparably, last year, another golf league called LIV Golf made its debut as a counterpart to the PGA Tour. However, the community’s reaction was not as positive as it was for TGL. LIV Golf had to rely on YouTube for broadcasting and only recently signed with CW. It seems that even with Greg Norman on board, ESPN did not trust LIV Golf enough to broadcast it. Or we could attribute this to the ‘Tiger effect.’

The Saudi-backed LIV Golf faced scrutiny because of human rights abuses. It was apparent that no other organization would initiate any deals or collaboration with it. A grave mistake or an excellent decision? Only time will decide Norman’s fate.

ESPN calls the deal “a multi-year partnership”

Additionally, Durant showed extreme faith in the league and said, “we have we have full confidence in what they’re doing. We have full confidence in how it’s going to be presented. We have confidence in the names and the reach of the audience that they’re going to bring on board.”

The new collaboration seems to be a long deal, as ESPN and McCarley have both called it “a multi-year partnership.” The league TGL brought out by TMRW and televised by ESPN will have the fans’ trust and innovation never seen before.
