“That was one of the best rounds I’ve played, for sure.” These were Justin Thomas’ words recently, and there’s no lie in what he said. His impressive 10-under-par 62 at TPC Sawgrass on Friday showcased his exceptional skill and focus. Thomas came close to creating history and ended up making his way to the course record.
Thomas’ round was a masterclass, with 11 birdies and just one bogey. The lone blemish came on the final hole, where his tee shot landed in the water. Despite the disappointing finish, Thomas beamed with pride over his performance, which included a stunning 18 1/2-foot birdie putt at the par-3 17th hole. The 31-year-old credited his success to staying present and focused. “It was just staying present, just focus on what I’m doing, not focusing on what could be, where the ball could go, anything,” he said. While we bask in Thomas’ glory, here are 5 other golfers who have made records on the same course:

Dustin Johnson
Dustin Johnson wrapped up his 2022 TPC Sawgrass appearance in style, firing a 9-under 63 to tie the course record. The 40-year-old delivered solid golf throughout, sinking crucial putts and ending his round with a stunning 67-yard eagle pitch on the par-5 ninth.
Johnson proudly declared, “It’s always good when you can tie a course record… I would have liked to have been in contention, but it’s still a great way to end the week.” Johnson’s impressive finish showcased his game in top form, despite struggling with inconsistent iron shots, and proved he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level.
Tom Hoge
“Such a weird day,” Tom Hoge told NBC, and he wasn’t kidding – just a day after barely cutting, he shot a course record 10-under 62 at TPC Sawgrass, putting himself in contention for the 2023 Players Championship. Hoge started his third round on the 10th tee with no illusions of contending, but 18 holes later, he was just a handful of strokes back of the lead. He went out in 31 on the back nine, and then birdied three of his first four on the front nine, setting the stage for something special.

After three pars, it seemed like the record of 63 would hold, but Hoge made a 24-foot putt on the par-3 8th hole and then sunk a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-5 9th to take the record.

Greg Norman
The CEO you know today was once a golfing phenom, and Greg Norman’s 1994 PLAYERS Championship performance still echoes through the ages. Norman devoured TPC Sawgrass in just 264 shots, setting a tournament-record 24-under-par that will likely remain unchallenged. He dominated the course, leaving an enduring mark that only two other players have managed to finish 20-under-par or better. Norman’s record has stood the test of time, showcasing his incredible skill and mastery of the game.

Jason Day
When talking about epic TPC Sawgrass records, one has to mention Jason Day’s dominant 2016 performance, where he joined an elite club by posting multiple wire-to-wire victories in the same season. Day sealed his win with a composed one-under 71, claiming a comfortable four-shot victory at the PLAYERS Championship. Although he was uncharacteristically nervy on the greens on the front nine, Day shut the door on the field with birdies at 10 and 12, cruising to the finish line with a 33 on the back nine. Day’s impressive win emulated the feats of Tiger Woods, Tom Watson, and Johnny Miller, who also achieved wire-to-wire victories twice in the same year.

Colt Knost
“I was nervous over the last putt just because — you know, so many great players have played this golf course and all that, and to be the first one and only one to shoot 10-under would have been really cool,” Colt Knost said after his thrilling round at the 2016 PLAYERS Championship, per Golf Digest. Knost faced his nerves head-on at TPC Sawgrass’ brutal finishing hole, but a conservative thought crept into his head, costing him a chance at history.
He settled for a 63, co-owning the Stadium Course record, and joined an elite group of players, including Fred Couples, Greg Norman, and Jason Day, who had achieved the same feat. Knost’s impressive performance ultimately earned him a T3 finish, with a total score of 3-under-par and a final-round score of 10-under-par. Despite the near-miss, Knost’s solid season continued, with 15 of 16 cuts made, but he remained hungry for his first top 10 and maiden PGA Tour win. So, whose win was the most memorable for you?
