Is Lexi Thompson's break from golf a sign of bigger challenges ahead for her career?

So a while back, Lexi Thompson made a shocking announcement that she’s stepping away from full-time professional golf after the 2024 LPGA Tour season. Reflecting on her decade-long career, Thompson expressed gratitude for the opportunities and experiences the sport has brought her. “I’m so blessed and grateful for the family I have. I’m just very blessed for the family I have … Just to have my family and friends and the amount of fans that were out there this week, that’s what we want”, she gratefully said.

Thompson has had a decent run this year and her recent performances included a T15 finish at the US Women’s Open and a victorious appearance at the Solheim Cup. Following a hectic September schedule, Thompson revealed she’s taking a 4-5 week break to rest and recover from a hand injury. “So I’m happy to have these next 4-5 weeks off to get some rest, make sure I’m 100% to finish the year, and put in the work as usual”, Thompson concluded, hinting at a strong return to finish her season.

The wait is not over yet as the golfer will not be making a comeback at the TOTO Japan Classic, according to LPGA.com. However, this tournament which marks the fourth and final week of the LPGA Tour’s swing through Asia has a lot of players. Set against the stunning backdrop of Seta Golf Course in Shiga, Japan, the 78-player field includes four past champions, including two-time winner Jiyai Shin. Notably, six of this year’s 18 total winners will also be in attendance, featuring Japanese major champions Ayaka Furue and Yuka Saso.

Thirty-five players from the JLPGA Tour will also be competing, a group that includes twin sisters Akie and Chisato Iwai. The field further includes notable players such as past champions Gemma Dryburgh, Ai Suzuki, Mi Hyang Lee, and Jiyai Shin. But forget about the TOTO Japan Classic because the golfer has quite some plans to end the 2024 season.
