Sports is nothing without the love and adoration of fans. Golfers, much like any other sports personalities have their admirers all over the world. But there are some who do not distinguish the players based on their loyalty to the rivaling tours. They simply admire the game and the spirit in which it is played.

At the East Lake Country Club, under the blazing heat of Atlanta, Jon Rahm met the biggest golf fan after round 1. Following round 2 of the 30-player event, 3-time FedEx Champion Rory McIlroy had the great fortune of making the same fan’s acquaintance. His heartwarming gesture made the young admirer smile broadly.

Kyler Aubrey is just as popular in the golfing community as most aspiring golfers. The 28-year-old is famously spotted at the majority of the tournaments, cheering for the golfers enthusiastically. The dire fan of the royal sport has had the opportunity to meet his heroes as well, which is more than most golf fans can wish for.

After the second round in Atlanta on Friday, Rory McIlroy who has been having some misfortune due to a back injury met his good luck charm. After a hearty handshake, he enquired if the family was returning for the weekend play at the $75 Million event. They did express their intent to return on Sunday but had a clause for the Northern Irishman. “If you’re within six strokes,” said the man presumed to be Aubrey’s father.

McIlroy enthusiastically addressed Kyler saying, “I got to keep it within 6 for you to come back?” He expressed his glee over meeting the biggest fan of the sport and leaned into Aubrey’s demand without a hit of irony. The 34-year-old golfer said, “I gotta go shoot a good score tomorrow so I see you Sunday,” and excused himself.

Aside from his autograph and reigniting their camaraderie, the 3-time at the Tour Championship made Aubrey’s day. Given McIlroy’s painful situation, he might need his good luck charm to return in order to defend his title at the wealthiest tournament on the PGA tour circuit.

Will Rory McIlroy live up to Kyler Aubrey’s expectations?

After delivering an even par at the end of Thursday, while battling excruciating pain in his lower back, McIlroy is making stunning progress. He shot a 3-under 67 on Friday, putting his total at 137, which is 5 strokes behind Viktor Hovland’s 132.

In order to live up to Aubrey’s expectations, the Irish golfer needs to maintain his stroke difference or reduce it further. If his back pain does not hinder his performance, given his potential at the FedEx Cup playoffs in the past, Rory McIlroy has a strong chance of still making it to the top of the leaderboard.
