The HyFlyers GC skipper has truly had a bumpy year of sorts with just four top-20 finishes, including a second place at the 2023 Masters Tournament with a 280 (-8). Moreover, he was dragged into the limelight as a result of his gambling habits, which caused a dent in the professional’s image. But even so, he has not shied away from the game, as the golfer’s update on social media took his fans by surprise.

A video was shared by the official Instagram handles of LIV Golf and HyFlyers GC, which showcases the 53-year-old giving driving tips to one of his fans. Advising the enthusiast on the same, Mickelson disclosed how he tends to focus on the “front-leg push” when hitting the ball off the tee.

The 45X PGA Tour champ demonstrated how much of a difference it makes when the toes give way a little bit during swinging. He drove the ball two times; the first was teed off using a regular swing, reaching 164 mph, while the second was hit with the toes, making way for a push on the front leg. The small motion made all the difference, as the ball was much faster on the second try.

The 6X major winner would be looking to apply the same to the course during the event in Jeddah. Moreover, he may even dish out the same advice to his teammate James Piot, who is currently in 47th place in the season standings and at risk of losing his LIV Golf status for 2024 as he battles relegation in the ‘Drop Zone’.

Mickelson and his addiction to wagering

The LIV professional had a long history of gambling. Besides, he was also well known for wagering on a lot of stuff, including sports. ‘Lefty’ had once made news when a report revealed how he had bet more than $1 billion on different kinds of sports. This included a wager on the 2012 Ryder Cup, which saw Europe win 14.5 to 13.5, where he bet $400,000.

Moreover, the golfer was alleged to have suffered massive losses in the past decade or so. Although the bets are just chump change as opposed to the money he makes every year, it has nevertheless tainted the legacy of one of the best golfers of the era.
