For Donald Trump, golf is more than just a passionate endeavor. In fact, the former POTUS happens to boast 16 golf courses spread across the US and the UK! But, unlike the Trump-owned fairways that have become venues for LIV Golf events, the Turnberry Golf Club, which he acquired a few years ago, has ended up suffering a not-so-pleasant fate.
Recently, however, the renowned course in Southwest Scotland received some much-needed positive attention, thanks to PGA Tour legend Gary Player! Let’s dive in to find out more.

The Turnberry Golf Course, usually referred to as just “Turnberry,” is extremely well-known in the golf community. After all, the links set-up has played host to four editions of the Open Championship, seven Senior Open Championships, and the Women’s British Open, among other things. Eventually, in 2014, Donald Trump bought the course under his umbrella of golf venues. But, he was delivered a crushing blow when the R&A, which organizes the Open Championship every year, stressed that the major wouldn’t return to the venue as long as Trump was the proprietor.
The last time Turnberry staged the Open was back in 2009. While Trump’s attempts to bring the tournament back to the course have largely been in vain, the Southern Ayrshire venue once again came under the limelight on Monday due to a visit from 24-time PGA Tour winner Gary Player.

Player’s love for the course came to light in a new Instagram post by Eric Trump, son of the ex-president. “It is not often that I stop to snap a photo on a green. But Turnberry is incredibly special and is a close second to Pine Valley in my top two courses on the planet,” said the 9-time major winner.
Player also stressed that the ban over Turnberry needs to be revoked so that it can host the Open once again. “It’s an absolute paradise of links golf with a storied history,” he further added.
Why did the R&A blacklist the Turnberry Golf Course?
There are only a handful of golf venues that boast as rich a history as the famed Turnberry Golf Club. Among the many history-making moments on the course is Tom Watson’s thrilling victory over Jack Nicklaus in the 1977 Open Championship. Greg Norman is also among the big-name players that have tasted triumph at the iconic venue.
However, the course’s reputation somewhat came under scrutiny after Donald Trump took ownership of it in 2014. A year after his acquisition, the R&A announced that the 2020 Open would not be played at the venue despite it being in consideration to stage the tournament before.

After the infamous 2021 storming of the United States Capitol, the R&A expressed its intention not to stage any competition at Turnberry unless Trump sells up. In May of this year, the golfing body once again reiterated that Turnberry continues to remain out of contention as a host.
