On Monday European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald announced his six picks to complete the 12-member team for the upcoming tournament in Rome. Donald has selected Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Nicolai Hojgaard and this Swedish player.

This young player has created history after being one of Luke Donald’s six picks. He is the only player to have made a Ryder Cup team without having done this. Let’s see what it is that he has accomplished.

Ludvig Aberg creates history

Ludvig Aberg is the rising star on the DP World Tour. His game has been exceptional of late. He won his first professional win on the DP World Tour recently. It’s no wonder the Swedish professional golfer is also one of the six picks.

At the 2023 Omega European Masters, Aberg won by two strokes over fellow countryman Alexander Björk. After bogeying his first hole, he shot a 6-under 64 in the final round to finish at 19 under to claim the title. “I don’t even know where to start, it’s a pretty surreal feeling to be honest. Obviously super, super happy,” said Aberg after the win.And now, thanks to his incredible game, he just got selected for the 2023 European Ryder Cup team. His Ryder Cup qualifying finish would go down in history. He is the first player in Ryder Cup history to have made the team without a major participation under his belt. This was posted on Twitter by Dan Rapaport.

The other six members of the team are  Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Robert MacIntyre, Viktor Hovland, Tyrrell Hatton, and Matt Fitzpatrick. All of them are automatic qualifiers. Even though a LIV golfer’s dream of playing in the Ryder Cup was not fulfilled, he sent a congratulatory note to Rober MacIntyre.

Austrian golfer’s sweet message to MacIntyre

Bernd Wiesberger made history in 2021 when he became the first golfer from Austria to play for Europe in the Ryder Cup. Sadly, this time around, it’s not the case. Having switched to LIV Golf, things have changed. Besides, his performances in the Saudi league haven’t been great. It may be noted he still holds a DP World Tour membership card. His spirit hasn’t dimmed, even though he didn’t make the team that will play in Italy this year. On his Instagram Story, he expressed support for MacIntyre. He wrote, “Very happy for this guy!” Yesterday, the 27-year-old MacIntyre automatically earned a spot on the European Ryder Cup team.

Well, we are also very happy that MacIntyre got a spot in the team but will Aberg make history in the Ryder Cup too? Let us know your views in the comments below.
