The never-ending saga of the 2024 season is the fans and their unending grievances with NBC’s coverage of international events. Just a few weeks ago, golf fans were utterly disappointed with the broadcasters as commercials load pulled the attention away from the event and fans missed crucial shots from the 152nd Open Championship.
The complaints about the coverage are not new. Last year, the spectators were frustrated as the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup telecasts had a similar issue. Now it has traveled to the Le Golf National as Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and many other pros tee up for the 2024 Paris Olympics. It has been just over 3 hours since the broadcast started at 3 a.m. EST and fans are already annoyed, to say the least.
Almost always, the leaderboard is shown on the screen when the tournament is running live. However, this was not the case for this fan, as they tagged NBC Olympics, Peacock, and Golf Channel and said, “Can we get a leaderboard on the screen for the golf tournament? Am I supposed to try and remember where everyone is at throughout the round? “ In response, Peacock replied that they had taken the feedback and forwarded it to the proper team.

But they weren’t the only viewer complaining about the coverage. Many others have shared different issues and unfortunately, did not get the assistance they needed. What were they raging up about?

As the Olympics has been being hosted in Paris, golf fans in the States have had to change their schedules to watch their favorites, including Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Collin Morikawa, and Xander Schauffele. The difference is night and day. The people are willing to watch the event but they cannot seem to find the American pros on live.

Calling out this issue, one viewer said, “@NBCGolf Are you serious? I get up at 3 AM to watch Olympic golf and you’ve got one camera on the first tee and you’re not following any of the US players on individual channels. What a joke.” Another fan raised a similar issue and compared it to another coverage, which had similar trouble in that fans couldn’t find their favorite golfers on the stream. This fan frustratingly said, “Olympic golf coverage same as pga/majors unfortunately just following the same two blokes.”
Nobody likes Grima Wormtongue from J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, and why would they? Well, for one he is slow, and second, he is evil. That is something that this fan was reminded of by the Olympics’ golf coverage. From the very start, the broadcast disappointed them as they said, “First 20 mins of Olympic golf coverage…and daaaamn this is going to be a pathetically slow broadcast PGAT is the Grima Wormtongue of the golf world!” Although the fan might have confused the event for the PGA Tour, which it isn’t.

After playing the front nine, Joaquin Niemann took the lead with a 4 under 32 score. However, NBC could not show all the shots taken by the Chilean pro. Thus, making this fan annoyed. They angrily said, “Neimann is leading and I’ve only seen TWO shots of his. What a lousy coverage.” There were no featured groups announced for the golf competition at the Paris Olympics, unlike the typical format of regular tournaments. As a result, fans were forced to watch the entire feed of every golfer. One viewer expressed their dissatisfaction, as they said, “@OlympicGolf Here in the US, we got up at 3 AM to watch Olympic golf f and you only have one feed focused on the first tee. Where are the individual feeds showing the featured groups …this coverage sucks !!! @NBCGolf.”
With three more days of men’s golf and four days of women’s golf to be broadcast by NBC over the next two weeks, will the feedback from the audience lead to improvements? Or will fans continue to endure subpar coverage? Only time will tell.
