Mackenzie Hughes' beer-chugging: Fun celebration or a classless act? What’s your take?

Every new golf event brings up new drama and controversies, and the 2024 Presidents Cup is no different. The Canadian golfer, Mackenzie Hughes, was captured on camera chugging a beer from a spectator’s cup during a celebratory moment at the Royal Montreal Club in Canada, and the fans lost their collective minds over it. While Hughes likely intended it as a lighthearted gesture, many fans took to social media to label the move “classless.”

The golfer kicked off the 2024 Presidents Cup in electrifying fashion, chugging a 16-ounce can of Stella on the first tee to ignite the home crowd. Fans are turning into critics over the incident and are arguing about behavior being unbecoming of a professional athlete, saying it was a disgrace to the honor of the Presidents Cup. But what exactly happened?

Well, before the opening four-ball session at Royal Montreal, Hughes greeted the home crowd with a bold gesture. He took a knee on the first tee and chugged a 16-ounce Stella Artois beer and generated a lively atmosphere before Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau faced off against Jason Day and Byeong Hun An. But man did that backfire? In the latest post by Golf Channel, the fans could see the whole incident, and let’s just say they did not like it, not one bit.

Netizens lashed out at Mackenzie Hughes over the beer incident

Have an interesting take?

Starting strong with what this one fan said, “They would call an American classless if they did this.” Well, it’s not entirely false. Remember the time John Daly faced heat by the fans for his drinking habits last year? In 2023 Daly appeared on SEC Nation to support his beloved Arkansas Razorbacks against the Cincinnati Bearcats. And while reading the “Hilly Billy Headlines” with Marty and McGee, Daly nonchalantly admitted, “I am not going to lie. I’m drunk.” This statement came as no surprise, given Daly’s notorious reputation for consuming large quantities of beer without showing signs of intoxication.

The video of Daly’s drunk appearance went viral on social media, where he’s referred to as “a national treasure.” However, not everyone shared the same thoughts on it. Like this one fan who said “A treasure? You all have the same low standards.” Another fan was so upset over the incident that they said the golfer should be booed in the stadium. “Drinking a Belgian beer? No Labatts, Molson, Moosehead or any Canadian craft beers. He should be booed.”

This one was ready to bash at the golfer with all they’ve got and compared the incident to Allison Lee’s and Megan Khang’s caddies taking their shirts off when Lee holed out at the 2024 Solheim Cup. “Oh come on…I don’t know what’s worse: this or caddies taking off their shirts at Solheim…”. Team USA’s Alison Lee sank an incredible eagle shot which sparked an unconventional reaction from her support team.

Comments like, “Cringe af bro s**t”, while another called the golfer a ‘clown’ and said, “What a clown 🤡🙄” also poured in. So what are your thoughts on the beer-chugging incident? Let us know in the comment section below!
