Is Scottie Scheffler the new benchmark for balancing life and golf? Rory McIlroy seems to think so!

The world no. 3, Rory McIlroy, recently interviewed with Kyle Porter for Normal Sport. The two had in-depth discussions about a variety of subjects like golf, life, and family. One of the topics was about managing golf and life outside golf. Porter asked McIlroy about how he and his fellow top golfers like Scottie Scheffler can find a balance in both these aspects of their respective lives.

While talking about the golf-life balance, McIlroy also acknowledged how Scheffler has a grasp of the situation. McIlroy said, “So you have to walk this very fine line. I think Scottie does a really good job of it because he obviously cares a bunch, but he also is probably humble enough to know that it’s not all in his control. And I think his faith has a massive part to do with that.” Further praising his fellow pro, McIlroy ended with, “I think he, more than anyone right now that plays a game, has figured that out.

McIlroy is as much of a fan of Scheffler as he is a rival. As he aspires to find some balance in his life like Scheffler, Rory McIlroy also talks about two other individuals who inspire him even more.

Who inspired Rory McIlroy in his amateur days?

Growing up, McIlroy may have been a fan of several professional golfers. But one of the men who inspired him the most never made it big in their career. Rory McIlroy talked about how he was always competing with Philip Francis during his teenage years. He was so good that McIlroy would always finish second or third to him. One way or another, Francis always had an upper hand on one of the best golfers today.

The forgotten hero of McIlroy’s teenage years was from Scottsdale, Arizona. Francis was an accomplished junior player, as he had several achievements in his big at a young age. He had amassed more than 140 junior event victories. He was also voted the 2006 AJGA Player of the Year and had a 65-week streak as the No. 1 U.S. junior player. McIlroy also considered Francis as “unbeatable.”

Another player that caught McIlroy’s attention was Jamie Lovemark. He said, “You just look at him; you’re like, this guy is like 6’4 and absolutely ripped and swings the club perfectly. I don’t know.” The Irish golfer played him at the Walker Cup event, and since then, Lovemark has left a lasting impression on McIlroy. Lovemark participated in the Korn Ferry Tour and won two events there. He achieved a career-high rank of 77 and currently plays in the second tier of the Tour.

Apart from the two above, McIlroy was also left in awe of the performances of Ollie Fisher. McIlroy witnessed Fisher play the Walker Cup a year before he participated in the tournament. Fisher’s performance was impressive enough to get him a DP World Tour card right away. But he too didn’t make much of an impact. Apart from his irregular appearances on the European Tour, he won a couple of events. We last saw Fisher in the Big Green Egg German Challenge powered by VcG in September 2024. He finished T70 and ended the tournament in round 2.

While McIlroy had a lot of praise for the above-mentioned players, he also commented on the pro who caught him off-guard.

Who surprised the World No. 3 the most?

Rory McIlroy played with Jordan Spieth in 2013 in San Antonio for the very first time. They only came across each other for the first two rounds as Spieth failed to make it through the weekend. Back then, McIlroy didn’t think highly of Spieth, only to be proven wrong a few years later.

The 4x major winner at that time thought to himself, “What is the big deal with this kid? Very average. And he comes on and nearly wins the Grand Slam two years later.” Spieth dominated the Masters in 2015 with 4 strokes less than the legendary Phil Mickelson. In fact, throughout the tournament, Spieth ensured everyone else was at least 3 points behind him. He also almost broke Tiger Woods’ from 1997 by tying him for the lowest score of 18-under 270. He would have secured a score of 269 had he not missed a 5-foot putt on the last hole.

Rory McIlroy is set to play his next tournament at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2024, wherein he may see Oliver Fisher as the latter is also going to be a part of it. Could there be any interaction between the two? Tune in to find out!
