Is Jay Monahan's leadership sinking the PGA Tour? What's your take on his recent decisions?

The inception of LIV Golf in 2022 has affected the golf world in many ways. Although a merger was announced to bring the leagues back together, there have been no advancements in it. Well, this has affected both leagues. The most important one is a drop in the viewership. Jay Monaghan’s league has already been under scrutiny throughout the 2024 season for it.

Not to forget the 13% drop from the 3.1 million views CBS had to watch Viktor Hovland’s win at the Tour Championship last year. According to Josh Carpenter’s report, NBC only had 2.7 million views to witness Scottie Scheffler’s win at East Lake in August. Even at the Masters, the numbers for the final round went down by a whopping 20% in April, despite having high coverage for the first two rounds. But what is the main cause of the dropping numbers in the viewership?

The upcoming event of the PGA Tour is the Procore Championship from September 12 to September 15. Last year, Sahith Theegala clinched the trophy; however, this year’s field consists of barely any big names. There are only players like CT Pan, Joel Dahmen, Luke Clanton, Stewart Cink, and some other players. None of them are on top of the standings. On the other hand, the DP World Tour will be hosting the Irish Open, which will be taking away a lot of the PGA Tour viewers.

The field consists of some of the best players on the Tour, like Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry, Aaron Rai, and Robert MacIntyre. When compared to the Procore Championship, the audience is much more excited to witness McIlroy compete on the grounds. At the US Open in June, McIlroy missed the victory by just a few strokes to Bryson DeChambeau. Nonetheless, the duel garnered close to 5.9 million viewers as per the NBC ratings reports. Golf fans will be more interested in tuning in for the event to witness the former World No. 2 perform against significant players.

Well, that is not it. To take away all the more viewers, there is the Solheim Cup. The biennial and much-awaited event of the Ladies’ Golf Circuit will take place on the same dates. The 2023 Solheim Cup was the main reason behind the contribution of the high rise in viewership for women’s sports. It staggered up to a 16% increase. This time, the tournament will take place in Chicago. This will result in another year of strong viewership for the fight.

Weeks after Jay Monahan released the 2025 schedule for the PGA Tour, Greg Norman also released the partial schedule for LIV Golf. It will be opening its 2025 schedule with four straight international events. Additionally, all of them clash with the early Signature events of the PGA Tour. Even the biggest event of the breakaway league, Adelaide, will be up against the Genesis Invitational, where Tiger Woods is the host.

It is like a direct competition thrown at Mr. T & Co. By Greg Norman in 2025. It will begin on February 13. And Norman has scheduled Adelaide for the same weekend. What do you think will happen with the TV ratings of the PGA Tour finally? Let us know in the comments section below!
