The National Institute on Drug Abuse defines addiction as a chronic, relapsing disorder characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite adverse consequences. John Daly seems to have discovered a way to bypass the adverse consequences of his addiction. He made a gag around his love for alcohol and an edgy lifestyle and turned that publicity into his cash cow.

Fueled by brand endorsements and sponsor invites that grant him ample golfing opportunities, he’s been managing well. Although his golfing career has taken a hit, Daly appears relatively unfazed by it. And his recent activity suggests just that.

It’s rare that a swing coach quits on a golfer, especially because of their drinking problem. John Daly made that happen. One would think that this would push him to bring himself out of the habit, but no.

In a 2015 interview, he admitted he was drinking too much whiskey and was afraid his body would not take that forever. However, there’s no evidence to suggest that he quit drinking or even reduced his whiskey consumption. His song about whiskey definitely gives us reasons to doubt that he has withdrawn from the drink.

In 2022, he even wrote a song titled ‘Whiskey and Water’ to celebrate his friendship with alcohol. In the song, Daly complained about how his friend, ‘Jack Daniels,’ won’t leave him alone. Only, it didn’t sound like an actual complaint.

His sense of humor and adventure-filled life keep him bathing in the limelight, and that brings him lucrative endorsement offers to exploit. Recently, the 57-year-old shared a poster on his Instagram story promoting ‘Good Boy Vodka.’ The cans even come with the tag ‘A John Daly Classic.’ The drink is the best drink in the world, the ad suggests. Sharing a post about how good the drink is, Daly’s daughter Shynah responded “iykyk!!!! too goood!!”

Let’s look at what he said about his drinking in this interview from seven years ago.

During his 2015 interview, Graham Bensinger quoted Daly’s words “If I played the tour drunk, I’d win every week,” and then asked him if he truly believed that. Daly admitted he did. Amused by his answer, Bensinger asked him if he had actually played golf drunk, and Daly nodded.

“Wherever I set course records, or whatever, I’d be barefoot, drunk, making every 20-footer I looked at.” He claimed that while he didn’t really properly drink on tour, just circumstances sometimes lead to him playing drunk.

Daly explained how when he shot pool with a buzz, he did really well, and when he was sober he didn’t. Bensinger argued about how Daly might have assumed he played well. Daly argued back and claimed that he knew he played well because he kept getting paid for winning games.
