“Obviously it’s the home of golf. It would be a special win. Something that you’ve always dreamed of as a baby, so it would be very special.” This was what Charley Hull said at the first preview presser of the 2024 AIG Women’s Open. She will be entering the field with a T27 position at the Paris Olympics, and a 5th position at the Women’s Scottish Open last week. However, her last few appearances have not come in without hindrance.
She entered the quadrennial event recovering from a shoulder injury earlier this month. Hull had to withdraw from the Aramco Team Series in July, but she suggested that now she is ready to go. “I have all my, like, little checkpoints. And at home I was playing some great golf,” she said with full confidence. But looks like, there might be a natural obstacle that might cause trouble for her.
Scotland’s cold weather will become Charley Hull’s biggest rival

The final Major on the women’s circuit is scheduled to begin on August 22 at St. Andrews. The weather is expected to be quite chilly, with the highest temperature predicted to reach only 18 degrees C and lows possibly dipping to 11 degrees C. This could pose a significant challenge for Charley Hull, who has mentioned suffering from degenerative arthritis. “Because when it’s cold, it can play up a bit. I’ve got — is it degenerate arthritis, in it, as well? So when it does get cold, it gets a bit stiff. So just try to keep it warm,” she said at the presser.
Worsening the conditions will be wind gusts reaching speeds of 72 km/h, with a sustained wind from the southwest at 35 km/h. A 95% cloud cover will further reduce visibility, making the opening round challenging not just for Hull but for all 144 players entering the course. The weather has the potential to create significant difficulties for everyone.
“Very windy; cloudy with showers; strong winds can cause power outages and tree damage,” says the weather forecast. Although Charley Hull added that cold is the only problem and said, “Apart from that, I’m healthy and ready to go.” But is she? There is a 91% chance of precipitation and an 18% chance of thunderstorms. The forecast predicts rain for three consecutive hours, with a density of 7.4mm. This could not only cause delays but potentially lead to the suspension of the round.
