Lilia Vu could not control her tears after her big win at the AIG Women’s Open at Walton Heath on Sunday. The title marks her second major championship, and in the same year as well. Whereas second-placed Charley Hull was quite disappointed about missing out on a major title twice in the same year. Last month at the US Women’s Open, she had tied for the second spot.

Adding to her dismay, the AIG Women’s Open experienced an unexpected twist toward the end. A group of protestors made their way into the greens and disrupted the event. Subsequently, the R&A, the organizers, had to arrest some of them in response. Let’s find out the whole story.

As the final group that included Lilia Vu and Charley Hull was approaching the putting surface of the 17th green, ‘Just Stop Oil’ protestors burst onto the scene out of nowhere. They came onto the green and lit up colored smoke flares in demonstration of their protest. Reportedly, five people got arrested after this incident.

Charley Hull, the runner-up of the 2023 AIG Women’s Open, got quite irate over the incident as she recalled it later. Hull has asthma and did not carry an inhaler with her. She was quite upset about the whole deal. The English golfer did not hesitate to express herself when she discussed the incident.

“What a bunch of idiots,” she commented, speaking to the Telegraph. “I wasn’t scared when it happened, just thought they were idiots. Someone said they are protesting about oil, but how did they get here today? Drove probably.”

Champion Lilia Vu too spoke about the incident and claimed she did not know why the intruders were there. “I didn’t want the lady to step on my line,” she confessed, talking about one of the protestors who appeared to run amok.

Is golf a preferred target for the protestors?

A similar incident happened recently during ‘The Open’ last month, at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club. Golfer Billy Horschel, who was in the vicinity, helped get hold of one protestor. Interestingly, there too the protestors targeted the 17th green. And it was also an event organized by the R&A.

Golf isn’t the only sport affected by this group. Some of the group’s members crashed the Wimbledon Tennis Championship last month and dropped confetti on the court. The ‘Just Stop OIl’ group has been busy expressing their disappointment all summer, across the United Kingdom. They are upset about the planned expansion of new oil and fossil fuel companies.
