For Bryson DeChambeau his first victory on the LIV Golf was worth the long wait. One year after signing with the Saudi-backed Tour, DeChambeau tasted his first victory at the LIV Golf Greenbrier event in August. He carded the final round of 58, 12-under-par to make waves in the golf world. After Jim Furyk, he became the second golfer to do so in men’s golf.

And one month after registering his historic win, the Scientist is opening up about how he approached the final shot. Making the finishing shot was tricky and DeChambeau delivered it with panache. Later this month (from September 22-24), he will be participating in the LIV Golf Chicago event. Prior to that, he gives the world a look into what was going on in his mind in the critical moments at Greenbrier.

DeChambeau appeared confident before the final round at Greenbrier and went to the extent of saying that he wanted nothing less than a win. He needed it at the moment more than anything else. It’s like he knew that that particular Sunday would end his winless drought of the last year.

His final shot was a 40-footer and after landing it successfully, DeChambeau jumped up in the air a few feet. One month after his ecstatic win, the Crushers GC captain has spilled the beans on his mindset approaching his final shot. He says, “Well as I approached the putt I was thinking, don’t give myself a 3 footer. I was just getting as close as possible and once we did a bit of the calculations, I was like all right. And I hit a 40-footer.”

DeChambeau reveals that he has been practicing 40-footers so he knew how that shot will go. He adds, “To start off every single day in practice and I know exactly what a 40-footer feels like. And so I just made that feeling, and I stroked it and it was perfect on the line. I was like oh my Gosh, this isn’t going to go in, is it? This is 58. It’s for 58 and you know I explode.”
