Is Scottie Scheffler right to take on LIV Golf stars like DeChambeau and Koepka in the Presidents Cup?

The golf community’s prayers have been heard. A two-on-two match will be played. The event scheduled for December on TNT will be PGA Tour players Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy against LIV Golf players Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka. It will be taking place in Las Vegas, but the course has not been decided yet.

Seeing four of these golfers compete together has been something that golf fans have been waiting for since the inception of the Breakaway League. This was also what many players, including Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele, wanted. Ahead of the President’s Cup, at the post-round presser on Tuesday, World No. 1 shared his vision for LIV Golf at the Royal Montreal.

Scottie Scheffler was asked if he thought LIV Golf had any influence on his decision to play the match with Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka. He began with, “I don’t know.” He then added how there have been so many changes in the deal ever since it was brought into motion, which has made it all the more difficult to understand the situation at the moment. Scheffler also spoke about the friendships that were initially affected due to the players transferring to the newly formed league in 2022.

Take Tiger Woods and DeChambeau for instance. They had been very close ever since they started playing on the Tour; however, the latter’s shift to LIV Golf led Woods to give him the silent treatment. But after DeChambeau won the 2024 US Open, Woods congratulated him. “I think in the beginning when some of the guys were suing us, that was a bit frustrating for the players out here, but over time those things kind of fade,” he added stating the reason behind the distance caused initially.

He concluded by stating that he tries his best not to mix his personal and professional life too much. This is because, when that happens, ‘things get a little hazy there sometimes.’ However, he is tremendously happy to be able to play a match with fellow LIV Golfers.

At the presser in Royal Montreal, he was also asked how he felt about playing against Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, paired up with Rory McIlroy. To this, he began with, “My manager takes care of a lot of that stuff. When he originally brought it up to me, I was like, yeah, it sounds like fun.” The World No. 1 played with DeChambeau on the team during his Ryder Cup debut in 2021, as part of the winning team. He also played with Brooks Koepka at the 2023 Ryder Cup, on Team USA. However, he has never had the opportunity to play with Rory McIlroy on the same team.

Scheffler noted that the experience of playing with the World No. 2 on the same team, against players whose strategies he is familiar with, will be fun for him. He said that with their amazing careers, he is excited to compete against them, as he has missed seeing them on the field. “He’s a guy I love competing against. You’ve got Bryson, with all his stuff, I think he’s a fun guy to be around,” concluded Scheffler.
